. >>> live from the channel 4 studios in boston, wbz news at noon starts now with breaking news. >>> this noon a hazmat situation at a local school sends 8 people including students to the hospital. authorities say this all started with a cell phone charger. >>christina hagar is following she's live with the latest. >> reporter: chris, this made for some scary moments inside the school. 8 people taken to the hospital after inhaling fumes from the charger. fire officials called it a phone charger. the president of the manville school said it was more like a universal charger with some usb inputs. the hazmat crew put the unit in a bucket labeled hazardous material after it overheated and then a member that caused another type of reaction that was a potentially dangerous situation. >>the student had a charger and it started to heat up and started sparking, and then he threw it down. some people came and helped. they took it to the bathroom, tried to isolate it. filled it with water and it started to off-gas. >> reporter: some people who were nearby inhaled the gas fumes and lightheaded.
