liz colin of our twin city station wcco joins us from downtown minneapolis with the latest. trk looks cold. >> reporter: it certainly is,erous. really a whopper here in minneapolis. you think it's minnesota, of course, and it's supposed to snow but it's been years since we heard the words, "blizzard" and "crippling snowstorms." this drift was at least 10 feet high at one point. the cold and the wind are only going to make things worse. the large and powerful storm is blanketing the upper midwest with nearly two feet of snow. strong winds gusting at 50 miles per hour are creating blizzard-like condition conditim south dakota to minnesota. residents here in minneapolis are trying to stay ahead of the 18 inches expected to pile up by the storm's end. >> it's rough. it's really rough, and all the snow doesn't make it any better. >> reporter: it's complete white-out conditions. officials have ordered snow plows off the streets and are warning people to stay inside. three major highways are closed. along interstate 29 in des moines, winds and icy roads caused disbz of spinouts and

here's liz colin of our minneapolis station wcco. >> reporter: it looked like a waterfall as snow poured on to the field from rips in the metrodome roof on sunday morning. it took 17 inches of snow in 18 hours to burst the metrodome's bubble, leaving three gaping holes, clearly visible from above. the inflatable dome just could not handle the weight. >> 1,360 tons of snow. that's more than four fully-loaded 747 jumbo jets. >> reporter: sunday was the worst of four collapses of the dome in 30 years, all caused by snow. crews spent the weekend shoveling the roof and examining the damage, both inside and outside. across the twin cities of minneapolis/st. paul, the sheer volume of snow is also causing a problem for plow drivers. they're simply running out of places to put it. snowplows like this are all over the city. this one at least six feet high so it's not going to melt any time soon. cars are entombed curbside and kids are being kept home from school and out of the below-zero windchill. meanwhile, the football game postponed due to the metrodome collapse is back on tonight, but in detr

liz collin of our minneapolis station wcco-tv is there with the latest. liz, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, harry. some call this snowmageddon, others describe it as the mother of all storms. either way, everyone agrees it's been a long, long time since a winter storm this powerful hit the twin cities. a monster snowstorm shocked minneapolis dumping 17 inches of snow in 18 hours bringing white-out conditions, closing roads and creating snow drifts five feet high. at one point it closed a 150-plus mile stretch of interstate 90. it was the fifth biggest snowfall in the city's history. workers tried to remove two feet of snow from the roof of the metrodome but captured in this dramatic video the stadium's 9 1/2 acre inflatable roof caved in and burst open. pouring snow onto the field. no one was injured. >> we had three roof panels rupture, providing for deflation of the roof. >> reporter: the collapse canceled sunday's game against the new york giants who were unable to get there because of the minneapolis airport was shut down for the first timen

reporter liz colin of our minneapolis station wcco tv at the mall of mek in bloomington, minnesota witht, boy does it look cold out there. tell us about this storm you're facing. >> reporter: good morning, betty. yeah, it is certainly cold out here this morning, ach as as seven inches of snow has already fallen overnight and it is not over. more snow, more wind and more cold is on the way. last weekend we picked up eight inches of snow. this weekend, we're talking about as much as 18 inches. that could close interstates and also set up shelters across the state because it is so dangerous. and then you said it, it's the cold, as low as 30 below by the time wind chills are factored in this evening. making this storm, as i said, extremely dangerous. now, we're already on track to be the snowiest december in more than two decades and, betty, you said it, we are still more than a week away from winter. so, certainly it's been brutal here in minnesota and looks to be a very long day that's ahead here. >> according to the calendar a week away but looks like you are feeling it already. all righ
