wdsu. as we have been reporting on this horrific scene that has unfolded in new orleans on bourbon street this morning. at least 10 people killed, 30 at least people have been sent to the hospital after a car or truck plowed into a crowd of people on bourbon street. you are looking at that local affililiate corage. we are moments away from a news conference that is set to begin. you just heard a b of a tee up here. we expect to hear from the head of the new orleans police department, she will deliver an update and chief among the questions was this accidental, was this intentional? you have been listening to the reporting suggesting that this was a very scary moment for so many people, obviously this deadly tragedy, you can see police now waiting to step forward to the microphone as we expect an update potentially from the da as well, potentially from the mayor cantrell. coming to us from our local affiliate wdsu in new orleans. we will take you to that news conference. we expect more throu

all right, cassie, this is our local coverage there from our nbc station, wdsu. let me bring back in our nbc news national security correspondent, tom winter, who's joining us now on the phone. and, tom, as this search for answers continues in new orleans after this horrific scene, we now know from a federal law enforcement official that the suspect here, the driver, is believed to be dead. any other details on that so far? that's right. kelly. that's the latest from our colleague ken dilanian, hearing that from a senior federal law enforcement official and starting to get some images that we're in the process of verifying from the scene, but it appears to be a white pickup truck. there's a number of bullet holes on it. and trying to corroborate some additional information that we see, you know, from that vehicle and what that can tell us. a law enforcement official who is not actively involved in this, but just obviously, this has gotten the attention of law enforcement officials across the east coast here this morning, pointed out that there was a bollard repla

so again, that was councilman freddy king live on wdsu. he says additional safety improvements are needed. those details will still be worked out. but stay with us on this developing story. back to you. we're now joined by randy rousseau in studio. just to kind of recap what aubrey said, that freddie king told him, new orleans has never dealt with an act of terror in a very long time, if ever. but we did host the first super bowl after the nine over 11 terror attack, which happened on september 11th, 2001. we did host the super bowl in february of 2002. we have the super bowl now in just about five weeks. so as freddie king said, the cy, state and feds are probably going to reassess the security package for the super bowl. and i know that you and i were just talking about this, too. the howard johnson attack was probably the last major, you know, event like that that you could probably consider as somewhat of a terrorist attack. but the fact that someone was just so brazen, you know, we've got so many fans who are in town right now for the

wdsu. fletcher mccall, uh, andy and jeanne, hold on and i'll get your reaction on the other side. >> yeah. and let me just kind of give you a layout of the scene here. we were on bourbon street. we were now on dauphin. we've been moved off bourbon street. you talk about vigilance in a hyper, hyper sense of awareness from law enforcement. take a look here to the left, photojournalist stefon cage. just stay with us. he's going to pan down. dauphin. you can see the police lights down. dauphin we're on dauphin in orleans you see two police cruisers with their lights. remember we were on bourbon street. so now the perimeter has moved to dauphin. right behind me you can see state police. and then we have a wildlife and fisheries agent right here as well. it's truly an all hands on deck situation. and as you go back down, dauphin, you can see at the corner of dauphin in the next block right there, you can see another police cruiser. and one of the big reasons why the perimeter has been extended. i

but we want to go right now to the scene in the french quarter with cnn affiliate wdsu's.letcher mccall. take a listen. reporter. >> yeah. travis. so we just had a second explosion here in the french quarter. they screamed fire in the hole a second time, and they detonated what sounded like another type of explosive device. you see some people from special operations and the bomb squad working right down the street. i think photojournalists define cage has zoomed in on them right now. so again, just to kind of set the scene here, the fbi alluded to the fact that there was an ied type type device that they were investigating because they feel like the suspect may have had that when he came into the french quarter to do the harm that he did. a state police trooper called in a suspicious device. we were cleared off of bourbon street. we're on dauphine right now in orleans. about five minutes ago, we heard the bomb squad scream fire in the hole, and we heard what sounded like a firecracker going off. and just about 30s ago, or about 30s before you came to me, we heard it again

wdsu .ce that we heard fbi officials referred to earlier in a press conference with local and federal authorities. you can see the scene , with multiple law enforcement on horseback earlier today and the crime scene tape all around that area. we know that officials are urging people to stay away from the french quarter this morning. the initial accident happening at bourbon and canal, according to city officials but the other area where there was this reported suspicious package or suspicious device was in a nearby block at bourbon and orleans. according to the local reporter . for those who may be familiar, we know there are multiple potential crime scenes at this moment. i want to bring in ken dilanian who has been continuing to work on getting more information. ken, you reported is believed the suspect is a deceased and that the fbi is looking at this as a possible terror event. why did fbi get involved so early in this investigation, do we know?>> we don't know and we have not heard spec

that was our affiliate wdsu. they were interest interviewing the district attorney there. i didn't hear any real news made as far as the investigation but clearly his office will be involved. this is now a collaborative federal, state, local law enforcement investigation with the fbi taking the lead. so because of that, we are listening to also what we are hearing from federal officials. let's go back to ken dilanian who has more from attorney general merrick garland. >> that's right. attorney general garland who has been briefed on the situation and has less than three weeks remaining in office issued a statement, not really any news in it but i will read it to you. the country woke up this morning to news of a terrible tragedy in new orleans that killed at least ten people and injured many more. my heart is broken for those who began their year by learning people they loved were killed in this horrific attack. my prayers are with the dozens who were injured including the new orleans police department officers who risked their lives to safe others. he added that the fbi i

there's a video we are trying to get cleared by wdsu, and we heard in the press conference you have been talking about, this vehicle driving around a police vehicle that barricaded, i believe it was canal street, and then hitting individuals on the sidewalk and progressing down that street until it crashed into that structure you see right here, that orange structure you see right here. then all of this footage pouring in through social media that we have been playing over and over again the moment essentially after this vehicle rammed killing ten people now, and 30 plus at this point remain injured and in the hospital. here, this audio we are hearing right now, you are seeing an individual who essentially was filming outside on bourbon street after this vehicle had rammed into this orange structure and then gunshots rang out. we have confirmation there was an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect, and you see the individual with his phone as he's filming outside this establishment and running into the establishment for safety. it shows the melee and chaos that took place on

wdsu, nbc affiliate. >> um, so do you think that by the person leaving before the taken into custody potentially explored his plan of what was happening? >> yeah, i have no indication if that either deterred his plan or not. we do know that those individuals appear to be unwitting as to what was inside the coolers when they were moving the coolers, or looking inside the coolers, but we don't have any indication that whether or not that deterred his plan. and as a follow up, you initially said that it was other people's believed to be a part of this. >> i know you said that you have no reason to believe that now, so we don't believe the person. whoever moved the cooler or anything was in regards to this. >> we don't have any indication that the individuals that moved the cooler were accomplices or witting individuals. um, from what we've observed so far and what we've gathered through our investigation is that they were unwitting individuals who moved the the cooler from location to location. um, without knowledge of what is in the cooler, driving it at all do you think he was driving
