the weather that has those nice it calm weather and warm water similar to the weather when they startedrip. the storm that hit them was unexpected. 2:30 in the morning is when that storm hit and two large waves capsized the boat. most of the men on the boat were asleep. they got off quickly or were thrown from the boat. some went to secluded islands, others floated with empty ice chests or they had life vests on and float the in the water until rescuers found them. the u.s. coast guard and the mexican navy searched for survivors for more than 36 hours. >> they conducted their search until they were -- the first crew reached their limit. the second crew was flown out there via coast guard c-130 to meet them and then they got in the same helicopter and the second crew, the new crew, took that helicopter down and conducted their search. >> >> reporter: the survivors they found are reported to be in good condition but some are certainly sunburned and dehydrated after spending more than 15 hours floating in the water before the rescue. two people from tuolumne county were on board the boat.

the dust storm is the latest freak weather phenomenon in a string of strange weather events. drought in the southwest has fueled wildfires in three states, but in the western mountains there was so much moisture this winter the snow is still there. a lingering snow pack that hasn't been seen for 15 years. that snow and record rains here in california were caused in large part by la nina, cooler water temperatures in the pacific that change weather patterns. that helped end california's three-year drought. but la nina was followed this spring by a stronger than normal jet stream pattern, creating winds that collided with warm water from the gulf of mexico, causing severe storms across the southern u.s. that led to all those tornadoes and record flooding. meteorologist jan null studies weather patterns. >> any time the atmosphere stays in the same place for an extended period of time, then you're usually going to start seeing some unusual weather events. >> reporter: and the weather may seem worse than normal because many of the storms have hit heavily populated areas. chicago,

the time is 6:16 and let's talk weather. we got fog to deal with in san francisco and a lot of the peninsula and north bay and everywhere else we are doing okay and 50s and 60s the temperature range and this afternoon partly cloudy and warmer. inland temperatures in the 90s and much more in line which where we should be in july and that fog should return for the evening and overnight hours and rebuild setting us up for another scene like we are seeing right now. let's look at the winds because that will be a fact. they are getting breezy and picking up at sfo and 11 at fremont and the wind is there and that fog. eventually we will pull back and this is where it is on the satellite, you can see it stretching into the north bay from fairfield and petaluma and the bay bridge inundated with a lot of fog. as for had the -- when the fog will burn off? low clouds and fog around the immediate bay and by noontime it will pull back and hanging around the coast and golden gate and by 8:00 p.m. begin to resurge and towards midnight tomo
