[applause] the national archives has a special place for me as with so many others. actually it was almost exactly three years ago today that we have a screening here for a two-hour documentary that we were able to do on one of my books born fighting which is a cultural history of the scotch-irish people beginning in scotland and into northern ireland and the settlements in the appalachian mountains. it was a great evening that might. there was a lot of very fine scotch whiskey because the scottish tv was one of the producers of the show. i also spent a lot of time in the national archives during my student days at georgetown law and actually after that when i was a star

. >> but forensic investigator jerry webb had a problem.needed to know if the weight of a 350-pound man created a different kind of a shoe impression on a tomato than one that you get by copying a shoe impression on paper or a transparency. so webb designed an experiment. >> i had a person that wore size 13 shoes put on a bomb suit and i added weights to the bomb suit in trying to increase the weight of this person to be more close to the weight of the suspect in this case, jim brown. >> webb sprayed water on tomatoes to simulate the rainstorm on the night of the murder. then had his 350-pound model step on each one wearing the suspect's shoes. webb discovered that the test impression on the tomato was virtually the same as the one taken directly from the shoe and the photo taken at the crime scene. >> i was able to take those two overlays and put them over top of a photograph of the tomato itself and be able to illustrate that, in fact, that the pattern matched up on the tomato impression. >> although the size of brown's shoe and the tread

brian webb is live in san francisco with the latest on the search, brian? >> reporter: now, this building is back to normal after a 15-hour search by the fbi where they say they found illegal explosives for an apartment down this alleyway behind it this green door. it belongs to this man, 42-year- old chamberlin last seen wearing a dark blood hooded sweat shirt. the fbi believes he is acting alone and on the move. they issued a nationwide alert for him. even though he has not made any specific threats, still, the fbi says that he should not be approached. the fbi head to toe in hazmat suits searched his apartment all day on side until midnight. they say they found explosives inside but would not say what or how much. this is the fbi spokesperson earlier today. >> we don't know the intent or motive yet. with that said, it is an ongoing investigation. again. i want to harp on the fact that there is no threat to public safety at this time. >> reporter: so the fbi is looking for him. they believe he might be driving a white nissan altima with california or texa

kpix 5's brian webb has more. >> reporter: i spoke to the attorney after court toad. his client made a big mistake. it seems he plans to shift a big chunk of that blame to the school and the students. >> it was the surveillance video that shocked the bay area last month from oakland high. a security guard unleashing an attack on a wheelchair-bound student sending the cerebral palsy teenager crashing to the floor and sending the security guard straight to jail and the unemployment line. the guard's attorney admits the video doesn't look good. >> no excuse to strike a student in a wheelchair ever as a security guard right? >> absolutely. absolutely. we also have information that the student wasn't 100% wheelchair-bound. >> mitchell posted bail and is no longer in custody and didn't want to talk after court, but his attorney did. saying the video doesn't tell the whole story. suggesting this school is partly to maim for lack of training. and partly maiming the student -- blaming the student himself who the attorney believes is a well-known discipline case who doesn't alw

kpix5's brian webb on what the feds dug up online. nd >> reporter: in chamberlain's russian hill apartment the felds say they found a fully functioning remote control homemade bomb packed in a mason jar loaded with shrapnel. they say it was connected to a clothes pin booby trap along with ammunition and a loaded .22 caliber derrenger handgunned with the serial number scraped off and materials to make three dangerous poisons dating back to june last year, aberin, pure nicotine and 20 to 40 castor beans used to make ricin. agents say when they arrested chamberlain at crissy field, he had a note in his pocket called a will of sorts. it goes along with his infamous facebook manifesto that read like a suicide note posted while the fbi was hunting him down. federal prosecutors will also use chamberlain's iphone and ipad against him saying he used the search words wmb, ricin, poisoning, arsenic, chloroform, homicide, suicide, ununtraceable and killing along with searching websites that display toxic recipes and bomb making instructions. bria
