it happened in the town of webster, just east of rochester.his story developing and my colleague poppy harlow following the developments for us from our studios in new york. what's the latest? what do you know about what happened? >> it's pretty unbelievable and think about the timing. another shooting. it happened just before 6:00 a.m. eastern time. firefighters in webster, new york right on the lake front, responded to a typical house fire. they showed up and were immediately gunned down, shot at. two of those responding firefighters were actually killed. two more were wounded. what i can tell you is that one of the wounded firefighters actually got in their car and drove themselves to ambulances and was taken to an area hospital in rochester. the other one was taken to the hospital, transport ed there. i want you to take a listen to some sound we have from a press conference that happened at 9:45 a.m. eastern time. you'll hear the e details from police chief picking. take a listen. >> responding firefighters when they pulled up on the scene

authorities have recovered human remains from a house in webster, n.y., to the suspected shooter shared with his sister. she had been missing since yesterday. officials believe the remains are hers. younger brother, william spengler, is responsible for setting fires and ambition first responders. two firefighters were shot and killed. authorities say they have also found a typewritten note from spengler saying he wanted to burn down the neighborhood and "kill people." the weapon is the same used in the elementary school shooting. in that community today, police officers received a gift of time. officers from across the state have stepped up to fill in so every police officer from newtown could spend christmas at homes with their families. they have been working nonstop since the shooting that left 20 students and six others dead. dozens are trying to help come for the community. the group passed out free hot chocolate to children on christmas eve. while many americans celebrated at home, some were outdoors and a few were far away. for so it was a welcome relief for a day to rest before

this happened in webster, new york, a town east of rochester near lake ontario. part of what local officials said at a press conference a new moments ago. >> just to recap, this morning at 5:35am west webster firefighters received a call for a car and house fire at 191 lake road. they responded with one engine, with two firefighters on the engine, two firefighters responded and private vehicles to the location. upon arrival the firefighters all drew fire. all four firefighters were shot at the scene. one firefighter was able to flee the scene on his own, the other three were pinned down at the location. eventually swat swat with an armored personnel carrier responded to the location and removed two additional firefighters from that scene. two firemen were deceased at the scene. two received serious injuries from the shots, and are being treated at local hospitals at this time. the names and we'll spell them for you after the press conference. one fireman was deceased at the scene, a fireman and will the with the webster police department was deceased at the scene
