but the context is, essentially that the supervisor weiner mentioned this is a huge industry. and it hires thousands and thousands of people, and in fact, 80 million spending customers come annually through these venues including restaurants. if we take the restaurant out and we talk about entertainment night clubs and bars you are looking at 9 and a half million patrons. so then, when we look at numbers and in terms of violence throughout the year, in permanent venues, we are talking about 127 that were reported to us through the police departments system of sending us weekly reports. and 100 of those, 127, were venues, permitted by the entertainment commission and then in 2012, that number went up, the total went up to 178 and ours 139. and you know, we can attribute that to all sorts of things, we saw an uptick in business. and so, i don't know that it tells a whole story, it is very, very consistent and up through this year, you know, we are half of that at the moment. those are violent incidents, those are dat batteries, assaults it is stave safe to say that these are hap

supervisor weiner? >> thank you, mr. chairman. i want to a point cha the chief made about the department being down 300 officers, sometimes we put obligations on the entertainment commission and then neglected to give them the resources to do their jobs, we have done the same thing with the police department, and fundamentally it is the responsibility of theed supervisor and mayor to provide with resources. we worked together two years ago to give it one academy class to the department where there have been years with no academy class and at trophy in the side of the department making your job harder and now the mayor and the board work together and we have made a commitment to fund three academy classes every year and it is going to take time to rebuild the ranks of the department given how many people are available to retirement but we need to stay committed to the three academy classes per year. and i also you know, i represent the castro which is not, quite on the same level as broad way in terms of the sheer number of people

i want to thank supervisor weiner for his leadership on this. and i want to thank the staff for trying to address the concerns of the immediate neighborhood there. the cac did support this project. for many reasons. first of all it's consistent with the market-octavia plan. which calls for improvements to this intersection. it enhances the historical nature and importance for dolores street as a gateway. not only on dolores street but a gateway to the mint across the street. it's a beautification improvement. which we very much support. it improves pedestrian safety. so there is really not much not to like about this project. the one concern i do want it raise and i hope that the planning staff will look at this more carefully. the potential conflict between bicyclists eastbound on market street with people, drivers eastbound on market street making a right turn on dolores street. with that intersection necked down, you may want to take a look at that. it's an important improvement. i am very much in support of it. this project is characterized

i want to thank supervisor weiner and the staff for a great job on the proposal. and i am glad they spared no expense with the graphics. the video was something else. i wanted to address a couple of points made. first of all, the 14-foot bulb out will slow traffic down. and when you are talking about pedestrian safety, that's the important thing is slowing people down. slowing people down by a second might seem like an inconvenience to the people driving, and perhaps that is true. but it enhances pedestrian safety. the cdc did a study of our pedestrian safety in our city and what they found was that if everybody slowed down by 5 miles per hour, you would see a reduction in pedestrian injuries and fatalities by half. so every little bit counts. there is some questions about the traffic analysis. i don't know if mr. reasons analysis is correct. but i do know that he probably is the single person in this room that knows this stuff better than anyone. i would believe him over our random neighbors, including myself. it should be pointed out that (inaudible) street over
