without further ado, please welcome city assessor phil ting. >> thank you. i am usually not popular with everyone else, but with other city officials, i am very popular. come budget time, they come calling. welcome to city hall. happy new year, everybody. it is an honor to see all of you here. it is a reminder for all of us as public servants that we are here to serve you. the day we opened city hall to all of you -- it is quite an honor to see all of you here celebrating with us. it is a reminder of how we have to constantly keep city hall opened, not just for the folks that have access, but for those that do not. it has been a struggle. as my colleagues have talked about, it has been a struggle for the community. and it is not over yet. we have some high hurdles to face, serious budget issues coming up this coming year. we have a lot of strong economic issues, moving forward, but i know that you know that all of us are working hard every day to solve those problems. again, happy new year. [applause] >> thahalwelcome to jim gardner. >> having been involved in moderating this for a good few years, we saw examples from the first thing this morning that both -- that mayor's can relate to. and they have sat down beside each other and they have sat down with each other and that was nice to see. what did you do to reenergize oakland as a good place to do business? >> the core of the plan was to revitalize downtown and he has this famous goal and it got to about 6000 if you include the projects and they are waiting for the economy to come up. that was critical to revitalizing downtown. san francisco as the number 1 retail city in the bay area. oakland has made an amazing investment. we have industrial areas. >> how much will your strategy rest

welcome to me your district supervisor. we're here with supervisors got scott wiener. he started his first term this january. we are going to get to know him and talk about the issues facing the city. welcome. thank you for joining us today. tell us about your background, where you grew up, went to school, and what kind of jobs to have had. >> i grew up in the philadelphia area, in new jersey. i went to school up and down the east coast. i went to undergrad at duke university. i went to law school at harvard. after clerking for a judge, i came out here in 1997. i have been here for the last 14 years. i have always lived in the castro. i am an attorney. i started out in private practice. i settle private law firm during complex commercial litigation. in 2002, and moved over to the sentences the city attorney's office where i worked on the trial team doing trials for the city, handling my own cases, and supervising a team of attorneys as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? >> i always assumed i would go back to the philadelphia area since that is where my family is. i was always interested in san francisco in terms of what it is as a city, its culture, it's amazing

welcome to this lovely part of our city hall. this was always made for this kind of attention because with in this room today, we probably have some of the most powerful women on the plant. so we have to pay our respects. but i want to thank family and the commission on the status of women. i know we have experienced a recent loss, and kaelin was such a great leader among the rest of the commission on the status of women, as well as her husband, who had actually started the state commission on the status of women. i wanted to just acknowledge that history. also, i did not see them here -- maybe they are still meeting, but i know the members of our board of supervisors just announced their honorees for this month when in history month honorees. i wanted to make sure i give a shout out to all of the honorees because the whole city i think cherishes the contributions of women in everything that we do, whether it is a department head, commission, consultants, contractors, vendors. there are women throughout the whole works of the way
