welcome to the city. businesstime takes a business lead. welcome to the city. i know you'll get all you need. welcome to the city today. >> hi. i am sumer shields. i am here as a congressional candidate but also a representative of the political action committee. i wanted to give you something to take with you. there are a couple of different things here. i hear the demands and the board of supervisors. a resolution calling on the federal government to put in place banking regulations, glass seigel. there will not be a recovery for the budget crisis without federal regulations separating investment from commercial banks. there is not going to be -- there is not going to be any solution right now for the economic crisis on the united states. san francisco has a budget crisis and you have california, they are bankrupt. the country of the united states is bankrupt. if you cannot have a federal resolution to this crisis, this is to free up the kind of credit that you need. we will not have the united states if we do not go with the kinds of banking regulations. we h

[applause] mayor lee: thank you. thank you very much. welcome to the people's hall in san francisco. i want to first of all say -- i have always wanted to say this. the commissioner is such a wonderful person, and she has been our commissioner on immigrant rights commission, but you could see her when we walked in. she was hustling around getting everybody settled, doing what we needed to do to have a successful event, but she has been a wonderful adviser to me for so many years and a great asset to the city. i want to give you a round of a free shares applause. -- appreciative applause. thank you so much. it is my personal pleasure to welcome all of you here to celebrate nowruz. this has been something that supervisor mirkarimi and i talked about for so many years, to make sure we on this day and make sure all of you feel so warm and welcome, so, we are joined by supervisors wiener, farrell, cohen, and there will be other surprises that will come in as w

[applause] >> thahalwelcome to jim gardner. >> having been involved in moderating this for a good few years, we saw examples from the first thing this morning that both -- that mayor's can relate to. and they have sat down beside each other and they have sat down with each other and that was nice to see. what did you do to reenergize oakland as a good place to do business? >> the core of the plan was to revitalize downtown and he has this famous goal and it got to about 6000 if you include the projects and they are waiting for the economy to come up. that was critical to revitalizing downtown. san francisco as the number 1 retail city in the bay area. oakland has made an amazing investment. we have industrial areas. >> how much will your strategy rest

city. that is why i get some great advice. i want to welcome you all to city hall, but also to invite you to participate in government at every level that you could possibly have. i see a around here the future of san francisco. the kids here, and for celebrating with us this wonderful occasion. one day you'll be the future of san francisco, and i want to celebrate with you right now. you are looking at somebody who did not get this job in the very traditional way. it took supervisors with a bold vision to say that they could select somebody who had been working here for 21 years, who had helped them, in so many ways help our city, established a diversity, so i'm here as if women of this board, and i always will work with this board very closely to make sure we continue opening up the doors of diversity and make sure our government is run well and that we make good decisions that reflect upon the opportunity to get our kids involved and make sure they are successful and that you as families here are successful. i understand the play of immigran

welcome to city hall.been laughing for the last 15, 20 minutes because we're joking with the supervisors and of course supervisor campos had to ask me, what are you wearing for carnaval? and of course i said, well, i'll begin with the orange tie. is there anything else i have to wear? with that fantastic performance just now, with trash mashup, i was thinking, supervisor, you know, i've been thinking, i've got to have a replacement for that one-hour question-answer period at the board. i think i've got a better idea now what to do with that hour. instead of question and answer i'm going to invite trash mashup to cover me for those question-answers. all right. that was a wonderful performance. thank you very much. and also want to shout out to, as elena alluded, all of these wonderful cultural programs that we have, through funding for the grants for the arts. but the beauty of them and the why they are successful is because so many community volunteers come out and they make it work and they make it happen

you have an international city that welcomes terrorism. it has conventions of people that come here and they love the city. they love the restrooms, entertainment, the venues we have created. they also love going to the small neighborhood corridors with wonderful businesses. i was just at the bazaar cafe. it has great food. you feel comfortable. people like that. that is why they move to the city. we have had investments in education that made our city successful. i never want a city that abandons its education system again. we submit millions of dollars to our school district. we have seen other cities fail in that mission. they thought the school district was a state system and had nothing to do it. this city does it differently. that makes our city successful in different ways. i want our son to be safe, solvent, and successful -- ouone -- i want our city to be safe, solvent, and successful. i suggest to you that we have a new level of conversation at city hall. it is welcoming of a good business climate. weak balance that with the servi

city college. >> ok, well, welcome, everybody. we thought what would be helpful for this -- those of us on this side of the park would be to hear from each of you one of two things. if you are in high school, tell us when you knew you were going to be a college student and what we either did to help or did not do to help to get you to that point. if you are in city college, it would be helpful to hear a similar thing -- what got you into city college, and what made it possible for you to stay? anyone who wants to start is welcome. >> ok, so, when i entered into the united states i did not speak english at all. my first language is russian, and my second is hebrew. i entered into balboa high school, and i had this great teacher who taught me english. i am super thankful to him, but i still need to learn english more, so i am going to city college. teachers, i think -- it depends on teachers, the way they teach us how to speak correctly. i was super shy when i entered the united states, and i could not talk in front of other people.

we will get to know her and talk about the toughest issues facing the city. welcome, supervisor. thank you for joining us. let's start by talking about your background -- where you grew up, what kinds of jobs you have work. supervisor chu: my parents immigrated to the united states about 30 years ago, and i would say that is probably the most formative part of my background. growing up in an immigrant family, you learn many things. my parents raised me in southern california, and i grew up in the restaurant business. they had a small restaurant at the time, and i was there every weekend, working -- well, not working, eating. having a fried egg roll, wanton, something good. it taught me the value of working hard and what it meant to be part of a small business, a small business -- a small business, small family, and an immigrant family at that. really being impacted by the los angeles riots, when that occurred, put me on the path toward public policy and understanding what it meant to have opportunities and not have opportunities in our various communities. >> why did you choose t

ladies and gentlemen, it is my distinct honor and privilege to welcome you to the official city celebration honoring your 2010 world series champions, san francisco giants. [applause] well, for 52 long years, this city has been waiting for this day, for this parade, and for the right to call themselves world champions.
