many occasions as to what is necessary for us to do and continue doing to make sure this is a welcome city that is supportive of strong families and that we keep on doing the right thing here and not allowing rhetoric or politics to get in the way of being a safe city, a successful city, a city that knows how to come out of this economic challenge in a solid whey. we need your help to do that. i look forward to seeing you in city hall, not just in the rotunda, but when we have internship programs. by the way, when you go to college, make sure you applied to city hall and all of our 60 departments. you can get an internship at the public utilities commission, health department, department of the environment. there are a host of departments that offer internship programs. while you are of studying in college, in the summertime, even during the year, you can be an intern and learn even more about how the government works. then you can think about a career, whether in the public or private sector, there will be good choices in front of you if you are focused. now we can start with identifying

we will get to know him and learn about the toughest issues facing the city. welcome. tell us about your background. >> i was born and raised in district 7. i went to st. cecilia's grammar school. i went to a small school in los angeles and came back here to teach law school. -- went to lost cool. i went to work here immediately after passing the bar on the first try. i worked at city hall for a few years. then lightning struck and was appointed as a member of the board of supervisors in august of 2004. i have been here ever since. the choice to live in san francisco was made for my family about five generations ago. we have been here a very long time. i could never imagine leaving. this is home. this is where i am raising my son and hope that he raises his children. >> what motivated you to get into politics? >> i attribute a lot of it to the jesuit credo to be men and women for others. there is the idea that the best way to service through the political process. i have a love for the law. i found a way to combine that with service through the political process. i hav

we will get to know her and talk about the toughest issues facing the city. welcome, supervisor. thank you for joining us. tell us a little bit about your background, where you grew up, where you went to school, and the jobs you have work. >> i grew up in the porthole and neighborhood. most of my childhood, i went to lakeshore elementary school. i love to talk a bell will -- about lowell high school. i studied political science with a concentration in public administration. i worked eight years, largely in the public sector. then, earned a master's degree from carnegie-mellon in pittsburgh pennsylvaniamy work . i spent time as an executive director for nonprofit on the hill. i was assistant to a wonderful person named julie middleton. the park that worked at was formally known as the hunters point community foundation. we did several programming for kids in the neighborhood. i also have a background in politics on both sides of the day here in san francisco and oakland. i have done fund-raising for different candidates. i have work experience with the federal reserve bank of san

now, it has new movable walls, new bathrooms with icons or pictures of all of our city to welcome in and make sure the experience continues to be positive. our tourism sector is set to grow also with america's cup. 34th america's cup beginning actually next year and culminating in 2013. the initial projections show that that event will bring in 5.5 million visitors along with over $1 billion of economic impact to our city. we will continue to make sure that america's cup is focused on organizing on four basic principles -- resourced efficiency, environmental sustainability, strategic adaptability, and a positive legacy that whenever we do has a longer term out, and benefit to our city. everything from the environment to transportation, to moving people around, to making sure even the way we pick up trash and the way people behave will be long lasting legacies for them. along the area of development projects, last year, working with the board of supervisors, we approved a development of over 5 million square feet of commercial space. 24,000 new units of housing. that, combined with al
