i want to turn to california where kristen welker is traveling with the president.day morning, as you expect, a lot of reaction from key lawmakers on these sunday talk shows. what is the administration saying at this point, and maybe countering what we're seeing op the talk shows from a lot of republicans saying we need to take care of what's happening in iraq? >> reporter: well, t.j., we reached out to the administration and they said they're just not going to weigh in on the debate we heard this morning on the sunday talk shows. as president obama continues to weigh his options in iraq. i can tell you that the president spoke with his national security adviser susan rice on friday and then on saturday, as he contemplates what the next step looks like. as you point out, he has gotten a lot of criticism from republicans, particularly, who say he should have seen this coming, that this is too little too late. here's a little bit more of what we heard on the sunday talk shows, on "meet the press" specifically. take a listen. >> if they can get to sanctuary, in the nor

nbc's kristen welker is outside the white house. kristen, how is the administration handling all of the bergdahl backlash? >> reporter: well, they briefed all of the senators last night, as you pointed out. they showed them that proof of life video, making the argument that it showed a bowe bergdahl whose health was deteriorating, that his life was in danger. and today, abby, we're learning a few more details about why the administration may have thought that. about an hour ago, the associated press reported that senators were told that the administration had been told that bowe bergdahl's life would be in danger, that he could be killed if news of this potential deal leaked out. i have just learned moments ago from a senior administration official that the qataris did say to the obama administration, that their intelligence said if the plan leaked, bergdahl's life would be danger. an official said, our judgment was that every day, sergeant bergdahl was a prisoner. his life was at risk. from the video we saw in january, he did not l

kristin welker joins us again. good to see you in palm springs.lier you told us about the administration's overall plan for iraq. what challenges is president obama facing as he weighs his options for intervention? >> reporter: one of the challenges has to do with intelligence then cannot trust the intelligence that comes from other countries in this case, from iraq. so the u.s. trying to gather its own intelligence so that president obama can make a decision that is targeted. he's weighing two main options it appears, at this point, air strikes and targeted drone strikes the other challenge, richard, is a political one. remember, president obama ran on a platform in 2008 of ending the war in iraq. he did that in 2011. critics say he should have left a residual force. iraq wouldn't sign on to an agreement for that, so they pulled all of the troops out. some critics argued that's why you have this destabilization in iraq that we are seeing right now. but of course, the white house argues that it is the fact that al maliki hasn't created an inclusiv

thank you so much, kristen welker from the white house. i'm joined by one of the few people who knows some of what sergeant bergdahl went through. he was captured by taliban militants in 2009, along with an afghan colleague while reporting in northern afghanistan. four days later he was rescued during a raid by british commandos. steven, i'm glad you're here to talk about this. what was your initial reaction when you heard about sergeant bergdahl's release yesterday? >> after seeing what his father has been saying over the months and years, you first think of the family. what a relief for him. what a poor situation for his son to be in for so many years. and politics will play out. inevitably, it always does. there are always these discussions, was it wrong, was it right, should the tradeoff been done in principle at all. the reaction for me, imagining the feelings going through his mother's and father's minds. >> let's talk about those four days for you. what do you remember about it most and what were they like? >> obviously it doesn't c

. >> nbc's kristen welker has been following today's hearing from the white house. contentious. contentious even on the question of whether and how sergeant bergdahl is being handled by american authorities. that seems extraordinary to me, given this is an american p.o.w. is this extraordinary to you, i guess i should ask? >> reporter: it certainly was the exchange that stood out for me, joy. i think that's why you saw secretary hagel pushing back on that. his broader message today was, let's withhold our judgment on bowe bergdahl until he comes home. and until there is an investigation into exactly why he walkeded off his base and into exactly what happened. you heard him push back against that notion that he is somehow being held there in germany for any other reason besides getting better. obviously, we've had reporters on the ground there in germany tracking his convalescence there. they have been in contact with doctors, medics who say this is going to be a slow process emotionally for him to come back. the other point i would make, joy, is that the white house

nbc's kristen welker is at the white house with more on that. kristen? >> reporter: good evening. sergeant bergdahl is in good enough physical condition right now to return to the united states but they also say he is not ready emotionally or psychologically. and as he continues to recover, the debate over his release rages on here in washington. recovering at a u.s. military hospital in germany, sergeant bowe bergdahl is describing harsh treatment at the hands of his captors. u.s. officials tell nbc's jim miklaszewski bergdahl tried to escape and when caught was confined to a small box-like space. he was clearly treated more harshly at sometimes but wouldn't say if that rose to the level of torture. officials also say he hasn't yet chosen to call his parents, despite the fact his doctors have said he can. meanwhile, back at his hometown hailey, idaho, some say they are stunned by the backlash against bergdahl, amidst allegations he may be a deserter for walking off his base, something defense officials are investigating. >> it's been very shocking, i think, how vicious the attack

nbc's kristen welker has more. >> reporter: the new white house report says the v.a. is plagued by a corrosive culture. deputy chief of staff rob nabors and acting v.a. secretary sloan gibson told the president on friday, the v.a. needs to be restructured and reformed. whistle blower dr. sam foote was the first to reveal widespread misconduct. >> i was somewhat shocked in how dead-on accurate it was. clearly mr. nabors and acting director sloan gibson did not pull any punches on this. >> reporter: the reports' key finding, the v.a.'s goal of scheduling patients for treatment within 14 days is arbitrary, ill-defined and misunderstood. and that may have incentivized inappropriate actions by va personnel to hide the treatment delays. the report also says the va has technology that's outdated and a shortage of doctors and other health care professionals. tom tarantino of the iraq and afghanistan veterans of america says the president needs to do a better job of coordinating with veterans. >> this report didn't need to be written, because we could have told the president a

so exactly what is so alarm something kristin welker is at the white house. with a good morning, what does this reveal? >> reporter: you're right. this is a strongly worded report. president obama directed one of his top advisers, rob neighbors to conduct this report. mr. neighbors identified that there are big problems. among the key finders, the 14-day scheduling period is arbitrary and has helped to fuel the misconduct, that the entire va needs to be restructured and reformed in large part because it lacks transparency and accountability. and finally, alex, the technology is really outdated. it calls for serious upgrades in technology. among the other solutions, the department needs to strengthen its management and reporting structures and that it needs to increase accountability and transparency. this final one i'll mentioned, alex, the tone at the top needs to change. the culture in the va needs to change and needs to encourage employees to point out and to talk about the problems they identify so it doesn't get to this crisis situation we have been repo

i'm kristen welker live in washington. andrea is on assignment. we begin with breaking news from the supreme court, two critical rulings, one with big implications for law enforcement across the country and the other for millions of americans like you. nbc news justice correspondent pete williams is live at the supreme court. i want to start with the ario decision. we note msnbc's parent company, nbc universal was among the broadcasting companies opposing ario. break down this decision for us. what are the implications? i know broadcasters are cheering the ruling. it could mean ario is out of business. >> this is a decision that really is an arrow into the heart of aereo. what aereo is a system that allowed people in certain cities that had the service to pay a fee and be able to watch broadcast tv signals on a mobile device, iphone, ipad, smart phone. you did that by aereo, when you logged in, assigning an individual tiny antenna to you and video recorder to you. aereo said that worked just like you do at home, it was just being done remotely. th

white house correspondent kristen welker joins me from washington. hello to you. is this the start of a new effort? >> it could be. here is the very latest we know, t.j. u.s. border control expected to fly hundreds of migrants south texas to california for processing as you say, according to "associated press." the move is part of the latest response to the surge of americans entering texas rio grande valley illegally. we've been reporting for the the past several weeks. the border patrol arrested 174,000 people since october, t.j. officials tell ap on monday two flights carrying more than 100 passengers each will head to san diego and el centro. that's an attempt to ease the workload at the busy texas crossings. the passengers will be mostly families with young children. these are not going to be unaccompanied minors. additional flights are going to continue, we're told, every three days. immigrations enforcement will decide whether to keep people in custody or release them while in deportation proceedings. administration officials said consistently surge in bord

. >> letd's go to kristen welker traveling with the president in palm springs this afternoon.tails around the president's discussions that i was alluding to earlier with the national security adviser? >> well, the white house hasn't read out the details of the discussion except to say that susan rice updated president obama on the intelligence as he continues to stay in close contact with his entire national security team about what the united states's next steps will be in iraq. we should say president obama spoke with susan rice on friday and then again on saturday from palm springs. as to the republican criticism that president obama isn't acting quickly enough, the white house pushes back and says part of what they are trying the to do is get accurate intelligence once the administration official says they can't rely on the intelligence of the iraqi governments or the united states trying to gather intelligence so they can come to a conclusion thats has the impact that they desire to have. one of the things they are considering -- air strikes. another, targeted drone strik
