joann, i know that the program initiatives that you work with deal with all the con congregation, can you talk about the senior members as well as teen members of the congregation? >> so our youth team has just really started thinking about how we want to bring initiative programming to our teens, which is trickier than the k through 6. we really thought about it as a youth team and then we implemented what we thought would make the most sense for them. with teens, we are being more careful. we are bringing our teens to our meetings and asking them what they want. what they need. what their lives are like. how they would like to receive information about mental health and mental illness. what are they not getting from other areas of their lives from school or from their parents and what makes, why are they still coming to synagogue? many of them had -- what can we give them that will help them feel as safe as possible. is it education, a safe place to talk? we are listening to them and hear wag they ing what they have to say and working on what they need that will make the most sense for them. that's something we are working

well, nearing $200 billion. not small change. this week i'm highlighting a federal program that has a lousy track record, and over $7 billion in leftover money, funds congress that has appropriated for this program. let me explain the program here. in 2000 #, shortly after -- 2008, shortly after the economic recession began, congress created something called the home affordable modification program. in short, hamp. home affordable modification program. this was a new emergency program established to help homeowners facing financial distress to avoid foreclosure by reducing their monthly mortgage payments. now this all occurred at a time when our country truly was in distress, a serious recession. people were working less hours or no hours and those who owned homes were finding it difficult if not impossible to pay the monthly mortgage payments. so the hamp program, which is a voluntary program for homeowners and mortgage lenders, that the two of them get together and agree to restructure their loan payments, they can stay in their home, and is it doesn't have to go through

do better with regard to their peer support program? >> well, i know there's about 900 out there now, but there needs to be more. we need more money to get that program built bigger and to have them everywhere because what our families told us is that they had a lot of trouble getting their veteran to the v.a. they had a lot of misconceptions about what would happen there. they don't understand treatment. they are afraid of treatment, they're afraid of being overdrugged. and so they would not go to the v.a. until they were in crisis. and then it's very difficult to get immediate mental health care when you're in crisis where we'd rather have them in the system before the crisis getting treatment. so these peer specialists have done everything from going and finding a homeless veteran to bringing them to the v.a. and getting them into the system, to getting them housing, to sticking with them and to describing what treatment is to saying i went there, i had the same symptoms, i went there and i'm better. so they can really be a bridge for all of

programs. you have talked to more than is 180 veterans so far. can you share perhaps a story that has touched you? that made you say this is why i did this? >> wellram that we're talking about that you see is called soaring valor. we fly world war ii veterans to the national war museum that is in new orleans, not in d.c. and i have a great relationship with them because i narrate some material down there. i played the voice of ernie pyle in a movie in the theater at the museum called "beyond all boundaries" and after i went to the museum for the first time many years ago, i sent my uncle jack down there who was a world war ii veteran, a b-17 navigator an they recorded him for their national archive which they have thousands of world war ii veterans recorded their oral histories on video. after my uncle jack passed away i asked if they would send me the dvd of his interview and it was moving to me to know that i had that. i thought of the many families who should have, you know, the stories of their loved ones told and preserved at the national archive there. i offered to start a program with the national world war ii museum called soaring valor.

for family wellness program. following with all of those stories our challenge is to help the immigrant families to navigate the system, and the system is quite difficult when not only health system and [inaudible] system, when it's time to provide them with information in the help for housing, especially the application. we have the same challenge. we do not provide houses services. what we do is to help them to understand the applications for them to apply. and although my first language, which is spanish, it's very difficult to understand the technical language in the applications. we promote citizens to overcome the crisis, and being a part of the community. and the participants of our programs in trying to strive to be part of the community, and sometimes without proper placement is very difficult. so we advocate for better system to provide them through the office, the mayor's office and the developer, easier way to apply for affordable housing. thank you. >> good afternoon, supervisors, i am gabrielle gabr

michael: parts of the program have done very well and other parts have not lived up to what has been expected. we expected programs fairly substantially. one, the program had substantial fraud, waste and abuse and we didn't address those issues, that being the lifeline program. there are still programs that need to be addressed. not getting the maximum dollar. howard: you have been in washington since the early 1990's, to what extent do you think the fighting at the f.c.c. reflective of the broader definitions in washington? michael: i worked with congress for many years. and it depends on the cycle and the leadership and the tone. and i think -- left that body 2.5 years ago. the commission has run in a fairly straightforward manner. if people are working together, i tend to be as collegeal as possible. if people want to do that, you can sidestep any particular problem. if the leadership, the majority has a particular outcome that they want and pushing as hard notwithstanding my views or my colleagues' views, if those views are sidestepped, hard to find commonality. not the rest of wa

billion in discretionary funding for the department of defense infrastructure and quality of life programs as well as for the department of veterans affairs. this represents an increase above current levels. this increase is directed to veterans affairs' programs which receives a 3% bump above 2016 levels. out of the total of $73.5 billion for the department of funding ffairs, 25.3 will treat seven million patients this year, in particular, i want to highlight funding increases that will address mental health care, suicide prevention and homelessness. the increase will help the v.a. tackle some of its greatest challenges, reducing the disabilities backlog and continuing the modernization of the electronic health records system to ensure no gaps in care occur as our current troops become veterans. the bill provides funding to support our active duty military and their families, funding for hospitals, education alpha silts, housing, tells our service members that they have the full backing of their government as they lay their lives on the lines for this nation. the quality of life programs, militar
