wen.how does it compare to the vaccine's effectiveness in other age groups? >> this is good, kate. so i am reassured that there will at least be some real life effectiveness of this data ahead of the meeting next week. priestly pfizer said the vaccine was safe for younger children, which is great, and it appears to be effective based on antibody response, that there is a strong response. however, we didn't know how well it protected against symptomatic disease. so this new study in more than 2,000 children, the same study, but now they have results in these children, found there were six cases of covid-19 in children who got the placebo versus three cases in the children who got the actual sax. so more than 90% protective. although this is still a relatively small study, so i think we need to keep in mind that when the fda reviews the data next week, they may not come out with as full-throated a recommendation as they came out for older age groups and maybe a more limited recommendation on

leana wen. good morning. you have an article in the "washington post." say, number one, shots for younger kids. this could be sooner rather than later, which, of course, is good news. in learning this, do you think changes could come? could this official request for an eua, could that change the time line at all? >> i really hope not because the fda has already said that they're approached authorization for the vaccines for 5 to 11-year-olds with urgency. this is the reason why they already set an advisory committee meeting for october 26th, pending pfizer submitting their application on time. submitting it now, today, gives the fda enough time to review the data, and i think there's a real possibility we could have the first shots going into arms by the end of october if all goes according to plan. we have to remember, too, in theory, it's possible the fda could come back and say, we need more data or that maybe only a smaller group of children, perhaps those with higher risk may be immediately proved. this is not a given, but i do very much trust the f

wen, thanks so much. political aspects.ith me in studio to share their expertise, let me start with jonathan martin, didn't the conservative position be that decisions should be at the local levels, parents should make decisions and then the business community and not the government. what has happened in texas? >> well, now the conservative position is that you should tell the companies not to do what you don't want them to do when your governor is up for re-election. >> you should mandate what they can't mandate. >> it's very hard to follow because it's not ideological. it is this idea that there is a base that is very upset about mandates. they don't want vaccines and you have a governor who is worried about re-election who is saying i have to get out here and look like i'm ready for a fight and i'm sure he wants to fight the federal government on this. that will be in his favor. >> how much -- berourke tweeting this, 68,000 texans have died from covid on abbott's watch. more will die as he prevents employers from protect

wen, the second item on the list. readily available rapid test. the boost production for rapid at-home test. the major change in availability won't come for another couple of months. how big of a game changer would those rapid tests be? >> we need to reset our expectations here in the u.s. we need to recognize that we will be living with covid-19 for the foreseeable future. we don't need to be in a state of emergency. we need to live with it so it is not driving every decision of school and work and travel and social activities. that's why testing is so important. in the united kingdom, every family is able to be tested twice a week free of charge if they wish. in many countries, children are able to be tested before they go to school and employees before they go to work. we need to change that expectation here in the u.s. as well. imagine what a big game changer it would be if we make it the norm before people get together for dinner or go to see a play that they get tested before. that is why the rapid testing is so important. it needs to be wid

. >> so let's bring in leana wen, an e.r. doctor. great to have you here. that is just the latest information that victor just read. so multiple mia loma and parkinson's and he was immunocompromised and he got his second shot in february and it is so sad to hear that he was scheduled for his booster shot this week when he got ill and had to go to the hospital. but given how complicated we now know his medical history was, would the booster shot have saved his life for somebody with that profile? >> well, it might have helped. but let's take a step back and look at his respecters. the first is that he is already medically fragile. meaning because of age being 84 and also we note that risk is additive so having parkinson's, multiple mia loma and that for somebody else they could have had a mild breakthrough infection but for someone medically vulnerable that could have led to a severe outcome. this results in people not mounting the same type of immune response as someone who is healthy so there was a study published in july that found that patients with mult

lena wen, author of a new book, life lines, a doctor's fight for public health. also with us, cnn's chief legal analyst, jeffrey toobin. author of "true crimes and misdemeanors, the investigation of donald trump." jeffrey, let's begin with texas governor greg abbott's decision to ban all covid-19 vaccine mandates in his state. the white house says federal mandates override the state level ban. how will the white house win this fight? >> well, i think they're going to wind up winning it in court, but i do think they'll win it. at least as far as federal contractors are concerned. that's the order that's already in effect. and most big companies have some contractual relation with the federal government, whether it's an airline like american or an oil company like exxon. under the supremacy clause of the constitution, i don't think there's any doubt that those federal contractors will have to honor the mandates directed by the government. now, the federal government has also said that they are going to issue rules through osha for all businesses with more than 100

leana wen.blic health." >> of course, anderson, we have to keep in mind that risk is additive. and general powell had at least two major risk factors for severe outcomes to covid-19. the first is age. an analysis of cdc data from august found that even if you are fully vaccinated, in their 80s have -- and then, you have multiple myeloma which is a blood cancer that, by itself, substantially increases the risk of infection. and treatments to multiple myeloma, too, include chemotherapy, steroids, things that further suppress the immune system. and so, this is an -- an individual who unfortunately was at very high risk for contracting covid-19 by virtue of having a suppressed immune system that may not respond as well to vaccines. and then, also being medical fragile and being more vulnerable to severe outcomes, sadly. >> and general powell was as we mentioned fully vaccinated, about to get a booster we're told. um, can you just give us some perspective on how the vaccine would have reacted in his

wen, thanks so much for joining us.ective against symptomatic coronavirus in kids ages 5 to 11. how significant are these findings? >> it's very encouraging, especially ahead of the fda's advisers' meetings next week. that's because previously all we had are the laboratory data showing that the vaccines, yes, they are safe, but also that they have a good antibody response. now we have real life data showing they're almost 91% protective, which is really good. that said, the study that's there is of just under 2,000 children. the advisers might say we need more data. but that needs to be balanced against the real public health thread of covid-19 to children. one in four new covid infections now are still in kids. there is real urgency to get these vaccines approved for the younger age group. >> there certainly is. cdc director rochelle walensky says when it comes to mixing and matching booster doses, it's a personal preference. how should americans make these important decisions about how best to protect themselves with

lina wen., based on the timing of these meetings that we might be able to start seeing the moderna and johnson & johnson shots be able, as far as boosters are concerned? >> this is so important, wolf. there are a lot of americans who have now heard that we need boosters, but only the pfizer booster is approved for people who got the two doses of the pfizer vaccine. people who got the moderna and johnson & johnson vaccine are wondering, what about me? now the fda is showing that they are acting with a sense of urgency. october 14th and 15th is when they are going to be meeting to discuss this issue of the moderna and johnson & johnson booster. i would expect that if the data turn out to show that they're safe and effective, they will be the go ahead for the fda at that point. the following week, presumably, the cdc is going to a meeting and probably the week of the 17th/18th, we could see shots of moderna and johnson & johnson going into arms. very importantly, the fda saying that they're also l

wen, thanks for joining us.mous support of this broad booster recommendation for the johnson & johnson vaccine comes as a new study shows protection from that shot declines to just 3% after several months. what shall we take away from today's unanimous decision, unanimous vote, and this new study? >> what we should take away is there are a growing number of studies that show that the one-dose johnson & johnson vaccine is inferior to two doses of moderna or two doses of pfizer. this is not just about waning immunity over time. it's that the initial vaccine, just one dose, is probably not enough. a lot of us think the johnson & johnson vaccine should be considered a two-dose vaccine at least. what the advisers did today is the right thing, to say that probably this should be a two-dose vaccine. if it's been two months since people's initial vaccine of johnson & johnson, they should be getting a second dose at this time. note this is very different for the phfizer and moderna recommendation which is that only high

wen, i know the white house prefers requirements to mandates.talk about mandates or requirements for the vast majority of 9, 10 months and now they're fully here behind them saying they're effective. was it a mistake to wait so long? do they need to be more stringent in the weeks ahead? >> yeah, i wish that the biden administration came on board with requirements earlier. remember that they had this fourth of july celebration at the white house itself where they did not require vaccines. so that said, i do think that they have really embraced vaccine requirements, which is great, but i think they should go further in two ways. one is around travel. domestic travel. planes, trains, interstate buses. that's one way to make travel safer and a way to further incentive advise vaccination. we need a proof of vaccination system. i can't believe that we're still reliant on this piece of paper that's easily forged, that many people are forging. that's something the federal government needs to step up. >> and it doesn't fit in your wallet. it's very frust

lena wen. we appreciate you breaking this down for us.been a question for some time, right, can i mix and m match? what more can we pull from these results? >> so this say really important study that a lot of people have been looking forward to because people want to know do i need to stick with the exact same brand of the vaccine that i got in the first place or can i switch to something else out of convenience or preference? so it is a pretty small study so far and involves 458 participants and nine groups because three of the groups are people who got the original vaccine and then the same booster and then six of the groups are people who got different vaccines the second time around. what they found is that there is good safety, that it doesn't matter if you got a same or different vaccine, it all looks to be safe, there are no different or new or worse side effects that have come up. and they also found that there is pretty good efficacy throughout as in you get a very strong antibody response no matter what kind of booster you end u

lena wen.f questions about how parents will act when this authorization comes in, what they are going to do. that school number seems to be the most important to me. what's your sense of a timeline and when this may actually be possible ages 5 to 11? >> well, the fda is going to be meeting with their advisers on tuesday, so in two days, to look at all the data around safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. so far, their report, their independent analysis looks very promising. i'm very hopeful they'll come out with a recommendation to the cdc, that's then going to be meeting the following tuesday and wednesday, november 2nd and 3rd, in order to officially authorize and recommend for the vaccine to be available. so we could be looking at the first week of november for the vaccine to be available for 5 to 11-year-olds. some pediatrician's offices may be able to deliver it at that time, and so if you're a parent who is very eager to have your kids be vaccinated, ask your pediatrician's office now

lena wen, former health commissioner for city of baltimore. we know pfizer's booster got the green light. moderna is the same, held there. is it a given in your mind that johnson & johnson's booster will be authorized as well? >> it really needs to be because first of all there are 15 million americans, myself included, who got the one-dose johnson & johnson vaccine who had no guidance throughout, even though we're seeing the data that the one-dose regimen is not as effective as the two doses of pfizer or moderna. back in august, immunocompromised individuals were told if they got pfizer or moderna, they can get the third dose. compromised people with the johnson & johnson vaccine have not been told that. i would hope what the fda does at the minimum is to harmonize to reduce confusion. they should at the minimum say that johnson & johnson recipients should be able to get a booster six months out. there's a question of maybe they should get a booster sooner. maybe also as elizabeth reported they should be able to receive a mix-and-match approa
