nguy wendy walsh. so wendy, can we predict how tragedy or trauma will make us evolve mentally?> no. what we can to is we can predict -- we can infer that the big, sweeping changes that happen in our culture will force change in individuals or groups. we don't know if that change is going to be -- or what direction the change is going to be, good, bad or neutral. so, for instance, a giant hurricane like hurricane sandy, is this going to make people take a harder look at climate change? or is it going to make them buy more house insurance, homeowner's insurance? or a tragedy like sandy hook. is it going to make people take up more arms or fewer? we don't know which direction things will change. but we can say that there are some big things that happened in the last year that i think have the potential to cause a lot of change in people. >> okay. so let's talk about that. of the big stories this past year, which do you think had the greatest potential to cause a major change? in our thinking? would newtown be one of them? >> newtown would certainly be one of them. i think we're go

win wendy, what do you say to people trying to get past this?> we have to understand that not only those children who witnessed things and the families who lost children with are traumatized by this but we're all traumatized by this. it's sort of secondary posttraumatic stress disorder that can occur from witnessing the story over and over on television. it's important we contain ourselves and our emotions in front of our children but still show compassion and love. let them lead the conversation so we tell them in simple, concrete terms about what happened. we assure them they are protected and safe with us. but more than anything, we watch for kids -- they have very different ways of dealing with trauma. they may regress. your child may want want in bed with you again. your child may wet the bed again long after you thought it was dealt with. this is not the time to be critical and not over-parent but understand this is part of the process for some children. >> and reverend spencer, when we were growing up, the schools, our places of worship,

. >> wendy, can you respond to marty's last argument? he's in effect saying if you come into the criminal justice system with a drug possession charge as a felony, you probably won't end up with a felony conviction if you're willing to seek treatment and very unlikely you would go to prison. you agree with that? >> i think it depends on which county you're in. i think san francisco is the only county in the state that currently has a prop 36 court that is still actively working because the state has defunded all the prop 36 courts in efforts across the state. so i think this provides senator leno's bill really does the right thing and tries to move in a direction that's not contingent to how much money is available within one jurisdiction or not and actually frees up $64 million of general fund at the state level that could be reinvested into services. i know when you look at realignment, for example, here in san francisco, a 1/3 of our plan, a third of our dollars for realignment has been invested in substance abuse treatment, mental he
