i don't no that we did it but it but we want to build forward. we want to build america. let us rebuild this country from coast to coast. >> what is the employment situation like? >> it is much better than it was when president obama took office. we created thousands of jobs but that is a big boom below $2 a gallon many times of the last few months. that is giving a boost as a people are having more consumer spending to go out to restaurants in movies and so forth and buy items for their homes. we have had some layoffs because of the weakness in the economy's in other countries. so it is still tender that we have an unemployment rate below the national average. if you are at 6 percent that means you have hundreds of thousands of people still out of work. we want everyone to not just have a job but have a good job. >> democrats in the house the president's idea of passing trade legislation. >> i don't think the president got much support from our side on that tonight. it will take creating jobs in this country. and not creating a race to the bottom for wages and benefits b

so we did. and we could not believe what we found. the word is getting out, but there are several things that we can do to turn up the volume. and that is why i am proposing a 50 million-dollar fund for economic development projects right here in new mexico. [applause] >> we can also provide specific incentives for those that moved to new mexico and we can enact other common sense measures this year that will not cost the state government a single dime but would save new mexicans money and make them a more attractive place to do business. for example i firmly leave that every person should be allowed to choose for themselves whether they want to join a union or contribute to one. [applause] [applause] >> this is not a complicated concept. it really isn't. most people agree. if they want to join a union, then they will that it is fundamentally wrong to require membership or take money from the paychecks of our workers in order to get a job. for these workers, this is gas money, rent, or a car payment studies have shown that they are al

we are humble about what we face but we are tens of millions of americans and we are committed that we are not going to have another raw deal and trade. we are going to come to the 21st century and negotiate trade deals that work for tens of millions of americans not just for hundreds of corporations. now it's my honor to introduce my brother from wisconsin who thinks this is a warm day in washington. representative mark -- [applause] >> thank you brother cohen and it is a little bit balmy. i have followed trade long before it came to congress. for 27 years i've been a small-business owner could have a specialty printing business a union shop and part of what we do is find american-made products for people. over the years i've watched a bad trade deal after bad trade deals send jobs overseas. it's almost impossible to find a pen that's made in the u.s.. in fact and rock county wisconsin accounted paul ryan and i share a representative congress we still have parker pens and in 2010 the last job left to mexico because of bad trade deals. we have seen jobs go away and wages go down and it

have diverse schools and we see here that we do. so i don't think it was mentioned that we have a cap of 200 students, is that correct? so this first class of willie brown will be the founding class. i think what excited a lot of students to enroll to put willie brown as their first choice is that these students will be the first students to choose their school colors. they would be the students to choose their mascot, they would be the first student body officers for this school and also they will be always the oldest students in the school, right? so i think that attracted them to this new school. i also wanted to emphasize that the way this school has been designed really complements what we're doing with the curriculum too. and as we build out a larger enrollment we will be offering more things. we looked for an orchestra, we're looking for much more elective choices and as we grow this middle school to its maximum capacity of 600 students that we will be able to offer more things. but this for a first class is fabulous and i ju

that's how we think about it. we welcome the conversation. we look forward to it. at the same time, we want to work to make progress on issues we know there is clearly common ground that we see. >> from ced. >> madam secretary, what do you see as the next steps particularly in the direction of affordable care either through legislation on a bipartisan basis or from nonlegislative action? >> i think as we think about the affordable care act and continuing to move forward on the issues of affordability, quality, and access, i think making sure that we have a successful open enrollment and that we continue to serve the consumer. that's the thing that is most in front of us right now. that's both about quality and affordability. second and continuing to work on that in the marketplace and contributing to a marketplace that works for consumers. second, in terms of continuing to work on that space, i touched upon it in these remarks. medicaid expansion is an important place for focus. and that's a place that has more to do perhaps with governors but in a bipartisan fashi

we are not going to allow that and anything that we do any deal that we arrive at if we arrive to one would be subject to scrutiny cross the board. not just members of congress, but more importantly by people who actually know how the technical aspects of nuclear programs can advance, and how we can effectively verify in the most rigorous way possible that the terms of the deal are being met. bottom line is this, we may not get there, but we have a chance to resolve the nuclear issue peacefully and i should point out by the way, even if we get a nuclear deal, and we are assured that iran doesn't possess nuclear weapons, we have a bunch of problems with iran on state sponsored terrorisms their rhetoric toward israel and financing of hesbollah we have differences with respect to syria, it is not as if suddenly, we have a great relationship with iran it solves one particular problem that is urgent. and it solves it better than the other alternative that might present themselves. so, so my main message to congress at this point is, just hold your fire. nobody around the world, at least th

we will have a debate and we will get a vote. so we will have a good debate on energy which is what we need to have. we will work to get the job done for the american people. we are hoping that this helps bring more bipartisanship and open up the senate and break to the gridlock. i expect we will be on this bill probably for several more weeks so that people have the opportunity to offer amendments and vote on it. >> how was the eminent negotiating going? i figure you are going -- getting involved and the senator of alaska is taking the lead on that. how is that going so far? >> it is going well. i want to give senator makowski a lot of credit for working to get this process going and being open. she can work both sides of the aisle very well. we are welcoming all amendments. we have a number of amendments that are pending and we will vote on them next week starting on tuesday. i think that is going well. some amendments are from people opposed, and some are for those for the bill. >> some amendments that have been offered have b

we have a problem that we need to address. we worked on it, but not good enough and that is the case of drug abuse in our state. the numbers show we probably have 650,000 plus people with a substance abuse disorder. if you looked at it in terms of death from drug overdose and drug poisoning, that number has gone up four- fold since 1999. last year we had a summit on heroin to help address the issue, but that's not good enough, so i am making a call now to say let's develop a comprehensive plan by october where we can do more to prevent drug abuse within our state and help these people. [applause] energy and the environment. we need a long-term policy and so in march i am going to do a special message on energy the main pillars are affordability, reliability and environmental protection. it needs to be an adaptable policy because of the lack of federal policy and the challenges of a global market place. we need to focus in on important things, such as, eliminating energy waste and the conversion from coal to natural gas assets

we need to protect the amount of water we have in missouri and we need to protect the quality of water have in our state. all across our state drinking and wastewater treatment systems, many built decades ago are starting to fall apart. if you've ever had a pipe burst in your basement, or a cracked maintain your subdivision, you know how costly and annoying that can be. that's what my budget this year includes $70 million, funds already approved by the voters and the legislature, to rebuild these aging water systems now and ensure that we leave missouri's water better than we found them.
