andrea mitchell, nbc news, washington. >> we have a lot of news on the economy tonight. the senate has given final passage to the financial regulatory reform bill. a response to the wall street meltdown that brought the world to the edge of economic collapse two years ago now. among the changes the new law will usher in a new consumer protection agency, will oversee all kinds of bank transactions including mortgages and other financial products. new regulations for banks, big and small, and wall street banks will face limits on risky trading practices. the president said today he'll sign the bill into law next week. but will it help convince americans that the economy is headed in the right direction? our own white house correspondent chuck todd sat down with the president today. an exclusive interview on the road in michigan on the state of the economy and more. >> the main thing that keeps me up at night right now is we lost 8 million jobs. the month i was worn in we lost 750,000 jobs. >> reporter: the president has been struggling to convince the public that things ar

it will be difficult and hard work, but we have seen already proximity talks taking place. my envoy, george mitchell, has helped to organize five of them so far. we expect those proximity talks to lead to direct talks and i believe the government of israel is prepared to engage in such direct talks and i commend the prime minister for that. there will need to be a whole set of confidence-building measures to make sure that people are serious and we are sending a signal to the region that this is not just more talk without action. i think it is also important to recognize that the arab states be supportive of peace because although ultimately this will ultimately be determined by the israeli and palestinian peoples, they cannot succeed unless you have the surrounding states having a greater investment in the process than we have seen so far. finally, we discussed issues that arose out of the nuclear non corp conference. -- non-proliferation conference. i intimated that there is no change in u.s. policy when it comes to these issues. we strongly believe that given region that it's in, and the threats

we must be there for them with our support. i yield back. the speaker pro tempore: the chair recognizes the gentleman from arizona, mr. mitchell, for five minutes. mr. mitchell: mr. speaker, i rise in support of bipartisan legislation i introduced yesterday with my colleague, congressman brian bilbray, to stop the dropped houses act. the government's failure to secure the border and fix our broken immigration system has allowed smugglers and mexican cartels to set up vast drop houses which serves as waste stations. in phoenix we have as many as 1,000 drop houses. they are dangerous magnets for violent crime. even more alarming is the fact that a loophole in federal law prevents authorities from being -- for using civil forfeitures to seize these houses. authorities can seize vehicles or even airplanes but they can't use civil forfeiture against the actual drop houses itself. the stop drop houses act would close the loophole and allow authorities to use civil forfeitures to seize these drop houses. obviously it will take much more to fix our broken system, but this is one obvious and important step that congress can take right
