governor wes moore has said he has four main priorities moving forward in this as we get to the effort of the salvage portion of all of this. he wants to first of all get the four bodies that we believe are underneath the bridge out of there. he wants to support the workers, not only the poor workers, but the construction workers that were both on the bridge, their families and the other construction workers that were part of the team, support them emotionally, mentally, and financially as well. and he also wants to start this rebuilding process. this is something that's not going to happen in a few months, not even perhaps in a few years. the bridge could take upwards of five years to rebuild. and our tom costello spoke to the army corps of engineers and here's what they had to say about this process. we don't have that sound, but what they said is that perhaps it is the most dangerous process they have ever undertook. they were going under the water. they're going to have to go under the water and start cutting the bridge into pieces. this crane that arrived is a thousand ton crane,

maryland governor wes moore has gone and seen the damage. t we may see him in the next hour or so for an update. we're learning maritime port authority of singapore is cooperating with u.s. officials and coast guard. there were 22 asboard that ship. their condition and location not kn known. immediate concern is the search and rescue that will continue throughout the morning in very difficult elements and conditions. we know there are vehicles in the patapsco river, that is the waterway this bridge crossed from chesapeake bay to baltimore harbor. it is about 50 feet deep. i asked authorities what is process to get the vehicles out. there are dive teams trying to rescue anyone in cars. it will take significant equipment to remove them from the water. not only vehicles on the bridge at the time of the collapse, some of the individuals are believed to be construction workers doing one kreet repair. unclear how many we are looking for, the number is seven, that could change. two came out, one okay, one in serious condition, taking to a trauma cen

announcer: this is the "cbs overnight news." >>> a short time ago, we spoke with maryland governor wes moores' families? how are they doing? >> i had the chance to spend time with the victims' families, and they're distraught, and they're heartbroken. but i tell you the hopefulness that they have, these are very prayerful families. and i had a chance to pray with them and pray for them. you know, they define what it means to be -- to be maryland tough and to be baltimore strong. >> two people were miraculously rescued. what do we know about the survivors? >> so there are two people that we know, one who is actually in shock trauma right now. so we have a remarkable shock trauma unit here in the city of baltimore, and they are there actively working on one individual. and another individual, who was actually the leader of that group, who watched it all take place. and i had a chance to spend time with him, and literally he tells a story where he was actually walking away from the bridge when the bridge began to collapse. and so he's, you know, watching what happened to him. and even as he sai

white house officials have been in touch with the governor of maryland, wes moore. it is possible we could hear from the governor a little bit later on this morning. we have also heard from secretary pete buttigieg who heads up the department of transportation. he, too saying that he has been in contact with the governor. and that they're monitoring these developments out of baltimore. also, the headline from the white house this hour. that there is no indication to believe that there was anything nefarious going on with this accident but, of course, the investigation by the ntsb just getting underway. we have yet to hear from president biden himself. is he going to be heading up to raleigh, north carolina today along with the vice president for some campaign events. it's possible he could say something as he heads out of town but the white house saying it is closely monitoring what is happening on the ground. we also heard from a number of maryland officials and those still hoping to become maryland officials including the former governor of the state larry hogan th

in stamens in the last hour, maryland governor wes moore says it is not just a local disaster, it impacts the national economy as well. julia chester is in baltimore. what else do we hear from the governor today on the discovery efforts? >> reporter: alex, there were quite a few bits of news in today's presser, which is still ongoing. first, an update on the ship, which we have heard about in a while. the whole is damaged, but in tact. that is new information. as for the salvage operation, you can see the crane in the distance behind me. governor wes moore broke down the next steps of the action of the operation. spotted the army corps in their partners will begin to move forward with a crane operation today. the north sections of the key bridge are going to be cut up and removed. this will eventually allow us to open up a temporary, t restricted channel that will help us to get more vessels in the water around the site of the collapse. it will take time to clear the section of the collapse. it will take hours. it is not going to take days. but once we complete this phase of the work, we
