and i had had that experience firsthand watching that first production at wesleyan. so you know, that was the beginning of a conversation that lasted eight years, and figuring out how to use it as another form of storytelling on stage. >> hinojosa: finding a director that you could trust... you said, actually, that when you met your director, you realized that he knew this play, in a way, even better than you did. >> yeah. well, you know, it's interesting. i had... i wrote it and put it up my sophomore year, and then it was in a drawer for two years. and someone gave a copy to tommy kail, some mutual friends, john mailer and neil stewart. >> hinojosa: john mailer being the son of norman mailer. >> yes, and... and so he had two years with this cast album that i'd recorded, and he'd listened to it over and over. and so, you know, he... he said to me, "hi, we've just met but your third song needs to be first." ( laughing ) and luckily, you know, i think any young writer gets very precious about their material, but since it had... i'd had two year's distance on it i was

hinojosa: and then what ends up happening is you go to college; you do, you get away, you go to wesleyan, you come back, you're living at home. >> yeah. >> hinojosa: you were supposed to be far away from the south bronx; you end up coming back home. >> yeah, i only came home, you know, because i was broke, literally. i started graduate school and i had no money; like, my program was that tough. it was english with a concentration in creative writing, and the only place that i could afford was my parent's... an extra bedroom in my parent's house. and i stayed there for two years, like, literally, and all i did was go from my house to the subway. you know, it's like i knew nothing about the neighborhood; i didn't care. and it wasn't until i actually got a part-time job working at a local community development corporation up the street, and just kind of got to know my neighborhood a little bit more. i, like, discovered that there were, like, artists there. there were people who did really cool things, and, like, loved themselves and loved each other, and i was like, "oh, my gosh... this...

and then to succeed at the most prestigious colleges including harvard, yale, columbia, and verse, wesleyan and so many more. so my hope now is my three children will continue to have teachers and adjust as inspiring if not more than randi weingarten and also learned the value of citizenship to maintain high standards i feel incredibly e blast to be among the many beneficiaries of her mission in teaching a public education and it is my distinct honor to introduce to you a leader to has embodied what the report -- education system represents my former teacher, randi weingarten. i went to wesleyan university in connecticut, and i was an english major. i stumbled into journalism , because i had no idea what somebody who's only skill was writing would do after college. it suddenly occurred to me that journalists get paid to write words, so i became a reporter -- >> that used to be true. >> well, i got paid very little to be frank. my first job was as a report at a tiny newspaper on the coast of connecticut, and i was the only staff writer on the paper. i had zero experience but that didn't matter. i wrote about crime which we actually did have some. i had to cover standoff in the streets but also covered the building of the new skate park and i was the restaurant reviewer and the playhouse reviewer. i did little bit of everything. from there, i just fell in love with the craft of journalism, and i became an editor. francisco, to san and that is where i got into tech journalism because san francisco is where tech is everywhere. i didn't identify as a geek. i kind of thought to myself i'm going to get out of this and go back to the lit
