we think an important hearing on the marine debris headed to the west coast from japanese tragedy and its long-term implications. we welcome david m. kennedy of noaa's service. we welcome rear admiral cari thomas for the united states coast guard. thank you both for being here this morning. the earthquake and tsunami which struck northern japan just over a year ago was an unprecedented human tragedy. in minutes it claimed thousands of lives, destroyed communities and touched off the failure of a nuclear power plant. the tsunami left the legacy which our west coast states thousands of miles from that epicenter are dealing with now and will deal for many years to come. marine debris is nothing new. it has existed for centuries made worse by proliferation of plastics which don't degrade. to some, like beachcombers who find occasional messages in a bott bottle, it's a delight. to others it's an eyesore or worse. many now recognize marine debris as a threat to fish, marine mammals and sea birds, through death by entanglement and indigestion. the tsunami unleashed debris on an unprecedented

satellite view will show you that the skies across the west coast are trying to clear out. now we start to see high pressure starting to build in. as we get back to the workweek, one of the things we notice is a pattern shift. we start the weekend with cool temperatures, a trough across the west coast which kept us in the cool temperatures yesterday and today and now high pressure is going to build back towards the coast. high pressure starts to build back in. we start to see happen here mid week, temperatures in the 80s and 90s as early as wednesday. in the meantime, temperatures still fairly cool, we're also keeping an eye on the low clouds and fog, right around the seconds half of fireworks time, we'll see low clouds and plan for mist and drizzle tomorrow. morning temperatures should be mostly in the 40s and 50s as the low clouds come back inrs. not going to get too cold tonight. tomorrow's high should be warmer. we're going t finally see a few more 70s for parts of the south bay. san jose should be in the low 70s then on the way to 80s. to the north bay after morning cl

but first, bill karins with a check on the forecast. >> no weather to talk about on the west coast today heading to the east coast as we go throughout this week. this morning, we're watching a lot of thunderstorms. toledo's got nailed all morning long. watch out lafayette, indiana. a lot of lightning with those storms. later on today, severe weather, all the way from the deep south, memphis to little rock, jacksonville, mississippi, back up to louisville. from columbus to cleveland back to pittsburgh, watch out for a chance of strong storms this afternoon. not too many tornadoes. mostly damaging wind and large hail. as far as the forecast goes today, the west coast, you are beautiful. grab the sunglasses as you head out the door today. not bad up in new england through the mid-atlantic. all the trouble weather from chicago southward into the southeast, just isolated tomorrow. and as i mentioned, all the stormy weather that's in the middle of the country is headed to the east coast. if you have airport plans, tuesday and wednesday on the eastern seaboard, do expect significant delays. mid

by 2013 it's estimated as much as 1.5 million tons of wreckage from the tsunami could reach the west coastom alaska all the way to california. montague island is a barrier on the alaskan coast catching much of the debris that washes across the pacific. this material, plastics, was carried here by the wind. there's more being carried on the currents. fishermen tim cabana has spotted it out in the gulf of alaska. >> it's like every mile or so you run across some more pieces. as you look off in the distance you can see pieces of stuff here and there. >> reporter: if there's any good news, it is that the debris is not expected to be contaminated with radiation from the japannese nuclear plant, disabled by the tsunami. nancy wallace monitors marine debris at the national oashianic and atmospheric administration. >> the fukushima plant had a meltdown after the debris was already in the water. from the experts we've talked to about radiation they that i that the isotopes would be weathered and gone because of their half life by now. >> reporter: but unrecovered styrofoam and plastic may never go
