there's a difference between east coast quakes and west coast quakes. magnitude of the mineral virginia quake was 5.8 and depth was very shallow the 3.7 miles down but felt up and down the east coast all the way to canada all the way south into georgia. now, here on the east coast the earth's crust is much denser. so the size mick waves are able to travel farther. different out on the west coast. really similar. 6.0 but the depth much deeper at 7 miles down and they felt this only 45 miles out from that the center so big difference there again the reason across the west coast the size mick waves travel much less because those quakes are a lot farther down into the ground much big difference there between east coast versus the west coast earthquakes. temperature wise our weather looks very nice and comfortable. mid to upper 60s this hour. lower 60s near the shore. some suburbs already at 63 in quakequakertown and doylestown. the clouds have dissipated mostly clear through the overnight hours that sets the the tape for lot of sunshine. comfortable start to

early in the civil war, the north is not doing so well but keeping the communication open to the west coast to california, keeping that transcontinental telegraph going was important enough that the u.s. government sent u.s. soldiers out here to maintain the telegraph. what they did was not send have many of them. the units located here was the 11th ohio calvary. things started to change in 1865 as the war winds down back east. you see more military units come out here. they were reinforced by the 11th kansas calvary. depending on the year, there were sometimes issues with the native tribes and sometimes they were more friendly, sometimes more hostile. this particular area was not settled. it was a pass through but it still created tension with some of the tribes. 1865 was a bad year for that. the previous winner in 1864, you had the massacre at sand creek. that was a colorado militia that road out of denver that attacked a village that was nonhostile, it was a friendly village. they massacred people. as a result of that, the summer after 1865, you had a lot of skirmishes and fights with th

but keeping the communication open to the west coast like california and keeping that transcontinental telegraph going was important enough that the u.s. government sent soldiers out here to help maintain the telegraph. they did not send very many of them. the units that were located here between 1862-1865 was the 11th ohio volunteer calvary. we had one regiment that was responsible for more than 300 miles of the telegraph and trail. things started to change an election in 1865 as the war winds down back east. you start to see more military units coming out here. we are reinforced in the spring of 1865 by the 11th kansas volunteer cavalry. there were a couple of infantry units. the third and sixth u.s. volunteer infantry came out here also as troops that were stationed in the west. depending on the year, there were sometimes issues with various native tribes and sometimes they were more friendly and other times more hostile. this particular area was not really settled. it was a pass through but it still created tensions with some of the tribes. in 1865, that was a particularly bad year
