west england. the child suffered injuries to his head and face. cumbria a man in his 60s. our correspondent fiona trott gave us the latest from cumbria well, this is where the police were seen yesterday, just off this busy road here, the a66 in cumbria. and what cumbria police have told us is this, that both they and the paramedics were called to a farm just before 3 o'clock yesterday because they had reports of a child having been seriously injured in a firearms incident. when they arrived at the farm, they found an eight—year—old boy with serious injuries to his face and head. that's how it's been described to us. they also found a gun. they arrested a man at the scene, a man in his 60s. he was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. the boy was airlifted to hospital. now, tragically, that eight—year—old died in hospital overnight. and the police have now told us that the man in custody is being questioned on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. so that tells us the nature of the investigation so far as work continues to establish

it began in 2017 when west cumbrian mining applied for planning permission to build this mine in whitehaven in cumbria has gone through several rounds of planning permission applications, cumbria county council level, and ultimately went to a public inquiry in a planning inspectors report which landed on the desk of the secretary of state two years ago. at that point it was michael gove, and he ultimately decided to give the minor planning permission to allow it to go ahead. that was controversial even at the time, there were several high—profile critics of the idea, including the government because my own climate advisory committee. subsequent to that decision, there was a legal challenge launched by two environmental campaign groups, friends of the earth and a group based in cumbria called slack who opposed the decision and believed it had been legally flawed in the way it was carried out. and then today, we had thejudgment as carried out. and then today, we had the judgment as you said from the high court which backed friends of the earth and environmental campaigners, who said the decision to allo
