but the city of west des moines is working with five of its neighbors to make the traffic lights work better for you. the suburbs of west des moines, windsor heights, waukee, ubrandale, johnston, and clive have formed a group called "the western suburb regional traffic signal operations group." that long name basically means the six cities will share traffic light technology that adapts to traffic conditions... west des moines is the only city in the state that's currently using adaptive traffic light technology. the software learns from traffic patterns and adapts when there's a back-up due to accidents or weather. the suburb will begin connecting its software into the traffic lights of the other five cities so western commutes are more fluid. don't get too excited just yet...it could take a few years for the systems to be fully integrated. each city will purchase and install its own adaptive dollars a piece. the main traffic concern for all of us tonight is the snow and ice... and if you would happen to find yourself in a bad situation, there are people ready to help. kristin rogers

"vehicular homicide by operating while police say mure was driving along 35th street on monday... when he crashed into a utility pole. the passenger... 22 year old scalicity boyd... was killed. mure told his mother he was speeding because he was being chased by people with guns... he said they believed he was responsible for an unsolved murder at "evolution nightclub." he even described their car... which police have since impounded. mure's mother says that proves something...

a driver is on the mend from a semi crash in west des moines... it happened on the interstate - 80 / 35 west mix master last night. the semi was going too fast as it merged onto i - 80... and its back tires went into gravel. that's when the driver lost control.... causing the semi to roll into a ditch. the driver was taken to the hospital... but is expected to be okay. the university of iowa is offering free vaccines... after a mumps outbreak hit campus. the outbreak has affected more than one hundred people in iowa city since mid july... mumps is highly contagious and is spread through contaminated saliva. it causes fever and swollen glands... among other symptoms. students are now packing the iowa memorial union to get vaccinated... there's a girl in my building that has the mumps right now, in my apartment building, so i thought it was important that i get it since i could be exposed to it. students were required to get the first two rounds of the m-m-r vaccine before they enrolled... the free vaccine will be the third. the plans to revitalize

the drury inn in west des moines was slapped with a discrimination lawsuit today. it's tonights big story. stephanie: the lawsuit claims staff at the drury inn discriminated against 22 year old meagan taylor, a black, transgender woman from st. louis taylor checked in on july 13th- taylor said staff members then called police. claiming taylor and her friend were "women dressed as men" and were engaging in prostitution. as a result- taylor was arrested and taken to the polk county jail for possessing hormone pills without a prescription. her charges were later dropped and she was never charged with prostitution she spent 8 days in jail before bonding out-- that's the video you see here. tonight, we talked to taylor and the a-c-l-u about the lawsuit.. claire powell has the story.
