west hartford's mayor is frustrated. >> i'm running out of words to describe how furious i am about it. this has been -- it's been hideous. there's -- >> reporter: she agrees with you. as we spoke, a resident chimed in. >> i'm furious. this is ridiculous. >> and she should be. >> yeah. we've been without heat since saturday. the house -- it's cold. and where are the trucks? where are they? >> reporter: connecticut light and power crews are hard at work, now getting help from 22 states and canada and the national guard. do you think you were prepared enough? >> i do. i think we were as prepared as we could have been for this storm. it has hit us a bit harder than we anticipated. but i think we have ramped up our workforce just as quakely as we can. >> reporter: governor dan malloy is keeping an eye on the clean-up and the utility's promise to get 99% of its customers back online by sunday night. >> i'm worried that they're not being realistic about it. that's why certainly i'm out here. >> reporter: bob and audrey are skeptical, too. >> forget it. >> we'll believe it when we see it. >>

we'll see. >> susan candiotti, thanks so much from west hartford. appreciate that.s here in the "weather center". it was about a week ago we had that surprise storm and how miserable that some people were shivering. >> i know. temperatures have warmed up a lot. i want helps a little bit. realistically, look at this temperature map. 40s, 50 degrees in hartford right now. at 50 degrees without heat, i mean, right? what do you think your temperature in your house? >> no. i would be a wimp. >> 68, right? energy-efficient. >> 68. pump it up to the 70s. >> you don't like the cold. most people are wanting to have heat with temperatures. overnight tonight it will drop down to 32 in hartford and they will gradually warm up throughout twek. temperatures will get better but it's uncomfortable. it's brutal. you have to prioritize. if your whole street or neighborhood is out you'll get power back first unless it's just one block. at least no big weather systems affecting them, at least not before that midnight dead lylid. two big stms. moving across the rockies into the plains.

our national correspondent susan candiotti has latest from west hartford. >> reporter: don, as a lotf public officials in the state of connecticut have been telling us, sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease. they call it a very slow pace of returning power. that's when things really started to pick up. this is the kind of thing that power crews have had to deal with. old trees that were weighted down by all that snow last weekend, snapping these trees in two, the trees falling on power lines and it created havoc. right now all residents want is to get their power back. at nearly every turn, fallen trees, twisted limbs and tangled vines. leaving hundreds of thousands of connecticut residents in the dark more than a week after a freak storm. >> at night we come home and do the best we can with no heat and cold water. >> no generator. >> no, we don't have one. >> we don't have one. >> reporter: you just have to bundle up. >> bundle up? we haven't bundled up like that in years. some people, including the mayor of west hartford, connecticut, are skeptical. >> i hope to god i'm wrongt's 99% by sunday night. we want to get people out of the shelters, get kids back in school, we want to get life back to normal. this has been perhaps a case snudy in absolutely how not to manage in a crisis. we don't need more press messages. we need boots on the ground. >> power company says the storm was far more devastating than expected and they're moving as quickly as they can. >> do you have enough people to get the job done as quickly as you like? >> at this level, we think we've got the resources we need to meet our goal, which is to have 99% of the state energized by sunday at midnight. >> how realistic is that? >> we believe it's a challenging goal and we -- but we're going for it. >> with the help of about 2,000 crews from 22 states, even vancouv vancouver, canada, can connecticut light & power make that goal, restoring power to 99% of its customers by sunday night? we'll see. t.j., back to you. >> is that by tomorrow night, reynolds? >> that's a big promise. i'm sure they

. >> our national correspondent susan candiotti joins us now live from west hartford. susan, were they able to make much progress -- any progress today? >> reporter: they have been making progress today. and i'll tell you why, don, because today we have seen more crews than we have ever seen before going through various parts of connecticut trying to get people's power turned back on. this is the kind of thing they're up against. for example, on this street, this is what takes extra time. you see that power pole lying in the middle of the street with a transformer? it's blocking the street right now, as are the power lines coming down here. that was after the heavy snow weighted down that tree, snapped it off, fell on top of the power lines. that's what's taking the extra time to get everything fixed. now, connecticut power and light says it has been doing the best it can because it never anticipated this much damage from a freak storm that happened a week ago. but if you're a resident without power and it is getting cold again tonight, it's not very pleasant. the stat
