let's talk to karen woolley, development manager at the staffordshire and west midlands federation of small businesses. presumably it is a good time to lunge this today because people are looking for christmas presents but presumably it is year—round challenge. yes, it is a great campaign raising the awareness of small independent retailers. it is the busiest shopping day of the year, the first saturday in december, but it is notjust about today, it is about the rest of the year. any measures that lead people to concentrate on buying small and local is a good thing. and why should people do that, and how are you encouraging people to shop small? retail is often excluded from traditional forms of business support put in place by the government so actually we need to help small businesses and shop local, and retail should be about a perfect mix, we recognise we have a 24—hour shopping mentality and lots of stores in out—of—town retail developments, but we have so many small local firms that need our help. the high streets are struggling and anything we can do to help is a good measure.
