dorian a very dangerous category 4 storm located 470 miles east of west palm beach florida with maximum winds up to 140 miles per hour moving to the west northwest at 12 miles per hour. so a slight pickup in speed. it is going to wobble in speed. the next sights are on the bahamas where hurricane warnings are in effect for the northern islands. the bahamas under a hurricane watch. this will continue to advance towards the coast line of the southeast. let's track it together. where is it headed? with the latest modeling, it begins a turn to the north and the east as it heads towards the south florida shoreline. perhaps the storm will parallel the coast never making landfall. as this modeling works, it winds up with its eye passing somewhere between savannah and charleston as late as thursday morning with maximum winds of 110 miles per hour. now this does not mean florida is out of the danger zone by any stretch of the imagination. so for residents watching throughout the peninsula, you must be careful, you must stay aware and listen to your municipal authorities. what kind of effects are

still going to see the potential flooding for west palm beach. we are still going to take action because we are still very far out. with the smaller compact system and it moving slowly, there still could be changes here. look at this how it moves up the carolina coast potentially to the northeast but still well off shore. flooding a major concern for florida, south florida to orlando here. 10 to 20 inches possible. with the high tide, that storm surge is still very deadly at times. also, the winds are going to be picking up to hurricane force across the florida coastline. but now, southern georgia to south carolina to north carolina, they are currently on our radar. we are still watching for strong winds and high tides still going to be a major issue. with the cone of uncertainty continuously changing. this is actually really good news for florida. but now, we are adding three to four more states into a potential landfall hereof hurricane force winds and damage. the big change now that this is going to be a coastal event. >> the scramble across f

we've always been a little further south than some of the other forecast models down towards west palm beachg increasingly confident with that track. the bahamas, the northern bahamas will get devastated, freeport, abaco island, i think nassau escapes. i think miami escapes. fort lauderdale, on north, things get real nasty looking and so we're expecting that landfall later monday or tuesday in that area after crossing the bahamas sunday into monday and then as you mentioned a slow crawl up along the coast. with the path fairly close to the ocean, the storm will diminish off its category 4 but probably still have hurricane force winds as it runs up the coast, all the way to eventually the north carolina outer banks. this is a prolonged siege that's coming. lauren: what category are you going to give it? >> i think it's going to go to a 4. weather bell, my company, we've been -- i don't want to say way out in front but we've been telling people this is going to be a bad storm, partly because the path of the storm 678. when you see it turn west, that's a favorable pattern for intensification. w

cnn's rosa flores is at a gas station in west palm beach florida. what are you seeing there? >> fred, take a look around. you can see that there is a line forming here to get gas. this is one of the only gas stations in this immediate area that we were able to find gas. from talking to the owner of this gas station, he says that his family owns four gas stations in the area and this is the only one that does have gas. and he says that this gas will probably last him until 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. this evening and then he's expecting another load. so he hopes not to run out. but as you mentioned, governor ron desantis announcing that there are shortages in the state. one of the things that does help is the fact that because he issued a state of emergency in all 67 counties of florida -- i'll move out of the way because there's a lot of traffic as people move around. what helps, fred, is that that eases the rules and allows more gas to flow into the state. from talking to a few people here, we just arrived so i haven't talked to a lot of people. they have mentioned that they are filli

let's get to cnn's brian todd in west palm beach.ian, you are at a rest stop along the florida turnpike, and what are people saying? what are they doing? >> reporter: fredricka, a short time ago the governor of florida ron desantis, said there's still a decent chance florida could take a significant strike from the storm, even though we know now that the forecast calls for it to possibly stay a little bit further east, maybe sideswipe florida a little bit and move north. still, evacuation plans are a little bit in flux right now. county officials here in palm beach county and elsewhere not quite sure yet whether to order those mandatory evacuations that they expected to order tomorrow. this is the northbound lane over here of the florida turnpike, the main evacuation route out of south florida during hurricane season, and i'm going to talk here to a gentleman who despite the changing forecast, he says he still wants to evacuate, rafael gonzalez. what made your decision to get out even though the forecast is changing and the storm cou

west palm beach florida which is in the current path of the storm, rosa, tell me how folks are taking this there? >> reporter: i just talked to a woman who was in tears. her name debra thomas, 69 years of age. see says she remembers hurricane andrew very clearly shooch she said she described it as its aftermath as an atomic bomb hitting homestead. she lives in a mobile home so she was here buying batteries and board to board up her home. >> i live in a mobile home, so i stand to be homeless but that's not really what's worried me. i have animals. i can replace my home, but i can't my animals. i've been through this a couple of times in the last 15 years and this is the worst so far. >> reporter: and she plans to ride out the storm with her daughter in an actual house, but she also said if an evacuation order is issued, that she does not plan to evacuate. i want to show you around because home depot has been very busy today. there's been a lot of speed shopping, people getting what they need very quickly, a lot of plywood to protect their homes and then heading to their homes to board

allison chinchar, thank you. >>> let's go to cnn's brian todd in west palm beach. brian, again, that landfall is not going to bring or keep the rain from flooding that area. is not going to keep what really causes most of the injuries which is the water that comes with these storms. so i understand the people there still preparing, how? >> reporter: right. they are preparing, and they're still making a run on gas. even at this station that has no gas right now, we were told there's a tanker truck on the way with about 9,000 gallons of fuel in it. going to stop here seen. people have started to pull up to the pumps in anticipation. this place around out of gas at 12:30, 1:00 in the morning overnight at this wawa in palm silver spri -- in palm spring. it was crazy. lines out the draw, down the block. they ran into loss of gas. floridians still uneasy because of the history here and because the uncertainty of the storm is so great. will they get sideswiped is, are they going to have to evacuate and head north on the turnpike, that's still a question. they still antici

mayor keith james from west palm beach is here with us.anks for having me. >> neil: how are things looking where you are and the preparation for this? you have to be ready for all contingencies. what do you think? >> we're closely monitoring the storm, the projection models are still all over the map. we are, as i've been telling my citizens, we're repairing for the worst and hoping for the best. our primary concern is making sure that the residents stay safe. so we're trying to basically encourage thing to do everything that they can now to prepare for the storm. you know, i've been through a few of these before with a lot of rain and wind. it's the life after the storm. a few days that you may not have power. may not be safe to drive. we're trying to get them to prepare as best as possible for life after the storm. what do you do, mayor, when you have to tell people to clear out and they don't? i always wonder how mayors and governors handle that. >> listen, we try to encourage people. we have a system where folks can find out what the e

well, we've got you covered from reporters in west palm beach to daytona beach. i want to begin now with cnn's meteorologist chad myers because he's got the hurricane advisora. what are we looking at. >> julia, 140 at landfall. i think that's the big number. that's the big takeaway from the 5:00 advisory. as it is on land, it will lose a bit of its steam. we've had a wide cone for a long time. now because it's closer the cone is smaller and smaller. the uncertainty goes from the keys up to the space coast at this point in time. as you stated, it started o slow down. the currents in the upper atmosphere that pushes hurricanes around will fall apart. this is just inundated with rainfall. there'll be nothing to push it along for about 48 hours. this is the 72-hour forecast. this is after midnight sunday night and monday morning 2:00 a.m. now we will move you ahead until tuesday. this is a midnight landfall. one of the worst things you can have is a dark landfall. u yo hear things moving. you don't know how big that thing was that just crashed. then all of a sudden i

so in places like balm beach fwardens, 14 miles north of west palm beach residents are making sure they are stocked up and prepared. and i want to bring in the mayor of palm beach garden, mark can you tell me -- you just came from a meeting with the folks at eoc how are you preparing. >> we're very prepared. the city went through this a couple years ago with irma. we have plan in place. the police chief, fire chief, all public works are prepared. we've gone through the checklist of what we want to do to make sure we're ready to respond as soon as the storm is over. >> what is the overall sentiment among residents. >> i think a little bit of anxiety. a little bit of nevdsness, frustration we are going through this again. but i think people are ready and prepared and our city is ready too. >> you mentioned irma two years ago. ali and i were here in florida, of course andrew in 1992. tell me about the lessons learned here for the community. >> well the lessons are very clear. we understand how to support the city, how to get around the city after the storm is kmetted. obviously we have to

south florida just between west palm beach and miami monday night. we are starting to see the european model making more agreement with the national hurricane center model, so we're going to still have to wait because we still need a little -- within the next 24 hours i think we'll be seeing a lot more consensus. as far as the probability of tropical storm winds high for much of central and southern florida from miami up getting close to jacksonville opinion the hurricane force winds probably by sunday night. heavy rainfall, we're talking anywhere from four to eight inches of rain as you get into south central and east central florida, but there could be upwards of 12 inches of rain and again, we have not seen a landfall of a hurricane, we've had 121 hurricane landfalls from brownsville, ex-texas, to east point, maine, since 1850 but haven't seen a hurricane landfall on the space coast, which is just south of cape canaveral moving further north in september. the last major hurricane landfall on the florida east coast was september in 2004, so craig,

the storm as you can see is 400 miles or so to the east of west palm beach, florida. what adam is going to be talking about here is the track and the track has moved a little to the east and turned up north. so whereas a couple of hours ago, it looked like it was just going to slam into that area north of west palm beach, brevard county, florida, somewhere along the space coast, it now appears that the track of the storm is turning a little bit east and then north. so you can see that curve up in which would go up along the florida coast, past jacksonville, savannah and all the way back into the carolinas. adam. >> leland, do you have me? >> one thing to make a difference here in the storm, the national hurricane center is the dirty side of the storm. at least appears as they will stay away from landfall. >> hey there, leland. i was following along with you, getting my mic worked out here. the storm is tracking and the worst side is always on the eastern side of the storms and it looks more and more like that's going to stay out to sea. a big storm either way. and win

as far as west palm beach goes, this is as close as the storm is expected to get.ad weather, likely in the strongest -- largest waves, wind, the rain. that's when they go through tuesday morning. the storm begins to track northward. we get into 8:00 a.m. wednesday. it stays about 50 to 75 miles off the coast. it will still have rough conditions here, tropical storm force winds at least. beach erosion, notice central florida, orlando area, kind of completely misses you, that's 8:00 a.m. wednesday, now, let's fast forward 24 hours after that, we actually begin to go northerly, then northeasterly, a very close call here for south carolina, still the center off shore, rushing the coastal areas. as we go into friday, the end of next week, it parallels the north carolina coast just off cape hatteras, this storm from tuesday morning off of west palm to friday is always within about 50 miles of the coast, we're talking about a forecast that is 3 to 5 days from now, and then the air could easily be 50 miles toward the coast or 50 more miles away from the coast if not more.
