for "pbs newshour," hari sreenivasan, morgantown, west virginia.can watch more of the stories in our series "rethinking college" on our website, pbs.org/newshour. ♪ a federal civil rights lawsuit is raising concerns about the treatment of pregnant detainees at an alabama jail and the potential harm to their unborn children whom the law claims to protect. stephanie sy has more. stephanie: ashley was arrested in march 2021 after law enforcement said she tested positive for methamphetamines. she was two months pregnant. the rest of her pregnancy was spent in the detention center in alabama where she says she gave birth in a jail shower without any medical help. a lawsuit filed by the advocacy group pregnancy justice alleges that leading up to the birth, she was denied regular access to prenatal visits, forced to sleep on a thin mat on a concrete floor, and during 12 hours of labor, the suit says staff only gave her tylenol for pain. the suit claims her story represents a disturbing pattern of inhumane treatment at the jail. for a closer look, i am joi

rebels could return to west virginia. now while west virginians were equally as unhappy about the likes of a potential boost in their midst. they had another reason for being worried. west virginia had been admitted as a state to the union in 1863. but it wasn't clear that this was going to hold there was a great deal of fear that virginia would reclaim those counties that had had left the state to reclaim them as part of virginia and if rebels returned and voted they could potentially outnumber unionists and the state might in fact revert to virginia. there's some 18,000 west virginians who had fought for the confederacy. in other words unionists face the prospect of having thousands of paroled confederates returning to a state they had been trying to destroy and so what do we see the same pattern that we see in maryland? in late april and early may at least 12 different communities and union strongholds past resolutions barring formal former rebels from returning home. these are more than just resolutions though. for exa

the whether whether people want to go vote for you in west virginia. still, we got to have that conversation in west virginia are seeing all the all of the rewards from that piece of legislation. with the new investments coming, we have berkshire hathaway coming in. we have basically form energy. we're going to be building battery storage at 1000mw. things that we've never had a diversification plus we're producing more coal than we ever have, better and cleaner anywhere in the world. we're producing basically with mvp 2,000,000,000 cubic feet, more will go into the pipeline helping the people in the northeast. everything that we're doing. and basically this bill is a balanced bill that's giving us opportunities we have never had before. okay so people just have basically people have been demonizing it. but when my own republican colleagues come out and say this is a balanced, balanced piece of legislation that is good for america, they've said that in their brief and they won when they won in courts. so we'll see whether you take this to the west virg

and west virginia certainly so. but a lot of these -- and while those are the most vulnerable seats for democrats to keep, there are really pretty tough fights being fought in the very purple states. pennsylvania, michigan, we have an open seat there, wisconsin, these are also states that the biden campaign is fighting vigorously in, taking the pro-class worker message into the blue wall states. so, it is hard to see daines calculation bearing out right now but we'll see. >> the arizona senate race is such an interesting race. kyrsten sinema, there is a democrat running, ruben gallego. there is a new candidate, kari lake. she passed along false claims that the election was stolen from her. she said it was -- there was mass fraud, which hasn't bourne out to be true. but steve daines had a message for her as she weighs into this race. >> we're having positive conversations with kari. one thing we've learned from 2022 is voters do not want to hear about grievances from the past. she's a very gifted speaker and leader a

say you live in broome maryland and west virginia now.does your background in your live in your journey play out? >> i think it's about rich politicians. on the one hand i think it's important to understand why normal americans, african-americans working folks, feel like the system is broke in and feel and it's hard to do that if you are in a bubble. by virtue of the background i come from in living in virginia now it's helps me stay in touch to be a little bit more sensitive of the populist vibe out there and i'm grateful for that and i think that's helped me ride the book. at the same time though i think my experience working in washington d.c., where i've worked for years in politics has also led me to realize some of these conspiracies are not true. they are a lot of really get people to work in politics who are really trying to do the right thing in who are trying to do well and so i think that's reflected in this book. i doee believe we need reform. i do believe we need to be sensitive to p the plight of working americans out there

in november of 2019, goeber rented a car from hurt in morgantown, west virginia, to drive to his newown to northern virginia, and i needed to get down there to start. >> reporter: when he got there, he says, he returned the car to the hertz location at washington, d.c.'s reagan national airport. >> and you left the keys in the car. >> i left the keys in the car. there was no agent there at that time of night. >> reporter: but last year, nearly three years after he says he dropped off the car, goeber was pulled over for speeding in louisville where he now lives. officers then ordered him out of the car. >> they pulled me behind the vehicle and placed me in handcuffs, and said that i had a warrant for my arrest out of west virginia. >> reporter: he says he had no idea why. >> was that scary? >> yes, very much so. >> reporter: then he says he spent a week in a louisville jail waiting for officers from west virginia to pick him up. >> it was hell. it was -- it was the worst, like, i wouldn't wish that on anybody. >> reporter: he was arrested just six weeks before he was due to be married

look, we are not just creating jobs in the region in western pennsylvania, ohio, west virginia, hydrogenub will run another source of good paying job to the coal community so workers who powered our nation for generations can now work and produce clean hydrogen, just like we've seen with reclaiming abandoned mines, manufacture advanced batteries in the solar industry because they deserve it and have powered us for so long. it's like my hometown of scranton. communities that were once thriving coal mining and powerplant towns will now be descendant of our new clean energy. we are restoring hope and opportunity and dignity along the way. that was my commitment, and that's what we are delivering. we are doing the same thing in the midwest. a hub in california and a hub in minnesota. all across the country, from coast-to-coast, when we are building clean energy futures here in america, not somewhere else, taking together the emission reductions from these hydrogen hubs from the equivalent of taking 5.5 million gas powered vehicles off the road, 5.5 million.
