the second question is what about the set of countries in western europe and sometimes -- some countries outside europe where democracy has been in place for a long time? i think the proof is in the pudding. these parties have not been in power long enough to know whether they are going to behave like they are in poland and hungary. there are certainly some worrying signs. in italy we have seen the first election in which populist forces have won a majority. thankfully that majority is split between different parties, and we will see how will they can coordinate. it is the first time a populist party has gotten over 50% of the vote in an entrenched democracy. we will see over the next year with that means once they take power. will they be able to weaken the judiciary, the free media and so on in the way governments have proven able to do in poland and hungary, or will they be more resistant because democratic norms are more deeply entrenched. we don't know the answer to that question yet. finally looking at the united states, the only observation i want to make is if there was a populis
