in this mass of reports out here in western illinois.most of the other icons represent hill reports. widely scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. between seven and nine storms are to arrive in the city in greater numbers. by midnight they're still roaming the areas. things calm down a little bit. we may get some good downpour's with these thunderstorms in addition to the severe weather producing capability. there is our storm. the powerful southerly winds are moving into this area with humidity. you see how the storm clusters blow up. a judge in cuts to the air mass. what happens is the air rises and begins to rotate. the thunderstorm tends to rotate and you get tornadic vortices to spend up. tomorrow we continue in the wrist area. these storms might reform. there is the thunderstorm watch currently in effect. have a heavy rain appear in the northern midwest. advisory's for wind and possible wild fires of west. is like a july day. look at the wind gust blowing here. lots of energy as all of this error movement goes onair movement go >>

we had a tornado warning for parts of western illinois. the threat is going down daytime heating is gone. darkness the cooler temperatures are coming in. we a moderate risk as we go through the evening. this is kind of rare to see into the overnight hours to see a moderate risk still up for these areas where we still think we could have potential for tornadoes. tomorrow it starts up all over again. the same type of risk for long track perhaps very dangerous life threatening tornadoes from north texas up towards the great lakes and midwest region, oklahoma city, joplin, missouri you are in this danger zone again. as we head into tuesday slow moving storm system. we could be dealing with this well into wednesday and even thursday as it finally moves into the eastern sea board. but all of these big cities could be affected by hail, damaging winds and tornadoes. and the flooding threat. one thing we haven't talked about, harris. this area still very saturated. we have flood warnings along the mississippi river and up towards the midwest. we ar

as for rain, we have heavier rain moving into western illinois.f low pressure right off the northeast coast is producing that northeast wind that's very strong right now, making for those almost gale-like conditions along the coast. we're seeing the rain pass back into central massachusetts and into connecticut. lighter showers across the jersey shore. you see that white stuff showing up in vermont and upstate new york, they could get six inches of snow in areas above 6,000 feet. the lift tickets are free in vermont. kicking off or ending the season there on a high note, i would say. we're seeing some heavier rain moving into western illinois but in north and south dakota, we have a couple storms popping up. we could see stronger wind gusts later on today. also, heavier downpours. today is chilly in the northeast. it stays chilly in the eastern plains moving into the midwest. at least that cool air will start to retreat. we should get back into the upper 60s in new york city tomorrow. and then on memorial day, most areas in the 60s and 70s. alex?

louis, missouri, even into western portions of illinois these watches will be in effect for the next several hours and there's ongoing tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings in all of these states at the current time. that's the story for the rest of tonight. i'm afraid tomorrow we're going to be talking about more bad weather and, in fact, that red area will be the highest risk for large tornadoes, hail, and damaging wind. northeast texas, louisiana, southeast okay okay and much of arkansas. but the threat of severe weather is going to extend all the way from texas to chicago, indianapolis and even portions of the great lakes. we've certainly started with hardly no tornado season at all and things have turned around 180 degrees the other direction. pretty bad stuff out there. >> pelley: david, thank you very much. jim couch is the city manager of oklahoma city. we spoke to him a short time ago. mr. couch, what have you seen in your town so far? >> it's a significant event. it's at least an f-4 tornado. a significant area of town in calahoma city in a significant part of town in mo

still looking at storms rolling through parts of illinois, into indiana there is a slight severe threat with some of these storms. a tornado watch out for western parts of kentucky, indiana and illinois. that threat is diminishing. really typically during the afternoon hours. the sun comes out and that's why we tend to see these severe storms producing tornadoes and severe weather through the afternoon and into the nighttime hours. severe thunderstorm watch across eastern parts of oklahoma. now no tornado warnings are in effect. if any are issued through out the morning hours we will bring that to you. the storm eventually picks up in speed. take a look at this. if you live across the state of ohio and pennsylvania and new york, west virginia. you could be looking at severe weather more isolated severe weather but again damaging winds large hail and isolated tornadoes will still be possible as we head into tomorrow with the very same storm. >> thank you maria. >> thank you. >> just how big was this deadly tornado and how does it compare to destruction from the past? >> good morning to you, heather. weather experts are calling the tornado one of

illinois. several in western arkansas. and a few in northeastern oklahoma, especially just east of tulsa. we also had wind damage reports, 173 of those. today, it's part of the same, slow-moving cold front, in yellow, from michigan back over into wisconsin, stretching right down into northern texas. we will see the chance of very strong storms. now, even though we focus a lot on the tornadoes themse selves, the he severe thunderstorms produce the dangerous lightning and large hail as well as wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour. of course, in red, right back into oklahoma, the same region we saw yesterday, that's the biggest threat of tornadoes redeveloping later this afternoon and into this evening. flooding is also an issue. we have several flood watches and warnings and flash flood warnings. the difference between a flood and flash flood is the flash flood happens in an instant. that's what catches people off guard. that's when people get sucked in while they're in their cars trying to drive through the flash floodsment with the heavy rain still coming down across illinois, over i
