behind me you get a sense of what little is going on in western kansas. most folks are sitting tight. just about everything is closed. the stores within eye shot of here are closed. the roads are a sheet of ice. the cars are going by, because we had some rain it froze, we've got a layer of ice and then snow packed on top of that. they plowed the roads. until we get some sun sunshine, which will be tomorrow, we're going to have problems with slippery roadways. i-40 is shut down between amarillo and albuquerque. they'll likely get that open at some point today. and i-25 out of albuquerque up towards the colorado line. so northwest new mexico virtually shut down as well as western kansas and southeast colorado. travel not advised today. things will loosen up later today. certainly tomorrow here thomas. a white christmas at least for some. here in kansas 50% of us who had a white christmas last year will not have one this year because of the snow drought. back to you. >> thank you, mike. appreciate it. >>> newt gingrich losing steam in the polls while taking

western kansas, people are socked in. highways are closed in the panhandle of texas. luck. forecasters say it may be impossible. that interstate 40 from albuquerque to the state line was closed. zero visibility has reopened. north of there, in colorado, blowing snow, packed snow, a glaze of ice shut down i-25. and then you have the amarillo, texas area. officials calling it a whiteout. sharon watson is here from the state emergency office. tell me what it looks like where you are. where is the brunt of the storm? >> the worst part of the storm is in the western part of the state, southwest, around garden city and also up near colby. i-70 had to be closed but it's just reopened. a significant number of roadways are drifting due to the winds so as much as five and six feet of drifting snow in parts of western kansas ranking from a couple of inches to a foot of actual snow. >> do you anticipate -- you mentioned a significant number of those highways still closed. any clue as to when you may be able to reopen them? >> several have been reopened but of the larger highways,

that's drifting. 10 to 20 inches is the highest snowfall total i've seen, east of colorado and western kansas. the worst of it this morning is now in kansas. it's slowly coming to an end. this is pretty rural out here, garden city, dodge city, colby, kansas, hayes, kansas i've been through some of these towns when i was out there tornado chasing. not a lot of people live in this area. it's mostly the truckers that are being inconvenienced by the shutdowns of the interstates. i think by later today, the storm will weaken enough that those will be opened up, and for traveling, should be okay. now, the moisture streaming out ahead of this -- typically when we get a big storm out west in december, it heads east and we're talking about snow all along it, but temperatures are so warm in the eastern half of the country, this is mostly just rain this morning coming up through st. louis, peoria, lafayette. a little, narrow sliver of snow near ft. wayne, but even there, the temperature's near 34, so it's melting when it hits the pavement. same story for northern ohio, where you may see some snowflakes,

western kansas, texas and oklahoma panhandle, it's still going on. ere. this video garden city, kansas, since noon yesterday they've been experiencing winds, is a stabed at 30 miles an hour. at times gusting over 40. visibility down to zero at times. that, my friends is a blizzard. and 70 mile-an-hour wind gusts. and mexico, 64 mile-an-hour. other spots in new mexico seeing intense amounts of snowfall. two feet in areas. and kenton, oklahoma, ten inches of snow. blizzard warnings out for texas panhandle. including kansas. and still now seeing winds blowing well over 30 miles an hour. this thing is not going to intensify. wind itself out and starting to stretch moisture to chicago, st. louis, cincinnati, back up to detroit and pittsburgh. most of it rain into the mild there. some of it in the beginning mixing in sleet maybe snow. general, the biggest problems are going to continue across the southern high plains. the mild air continues to be entrenched across the east coast for the next few days at least. 46 a high temperature in new york. 61 in atlant

western kansas, that's where some of the most hairy weather has been. sustained 30 miles per hour or greater since noon yesterday. so, even without the snowfall coming down, it's been blowing sideways. where it did come down. it came down two feet in pietown, new mexico, and ten inches in kenton, oklahoma. other wind gusts equally impressive. we're starting to see this wind down just a little bit, but the moisture of this is stretching off to the east and getting into chicago, pittsburgh, places like this. most of this is heading into some mild air. so, as it traverses north and east towards the lower northeast, we shouldn't see much of a problem. maybe a midst in chicago to pittsburgh and heads to the new york city area come is all rain with this particular system and then we focus to the next one diving down into the same area and pose a threat for the northeast corridor in the way of holiday travel over the next few days and then another system coming down for christmas. so, busy week ahead, once this thing winds down. kyra? >> rob, thank you so much

that's still dealing with the blizzard conditions in parts of western kansas this morning. some of the snow drifts 2, 3 feet. whiteout conditions there. look at the heavy showers and storms across the mississippi valley down near memphis this morning. some of that rain with snow on the northern edge that we're just looking at closer to home. looks like the rain showers will be with us here as we go through the middle of the day, especially northern sections. got a better chance of showers in southern areas. we'll go through tonight. here we are at 7:00 p.m. this evening is quiet. overnight tonight a few more showers return during the overnight period. but much of that goes up to pennsylvania. tomorrow morning any showers more likely north and south. then during the day waves of showers will push through at times. here we are at noon. then again in the afternoon. some showers around here and there. might even get a rumble of thunder if we get warm enough, especially south where temperatures will be pushing the 60-degree mark in spots south of town tomorrow. so a very mild we

we're in western kansas, joe, and the high plains have been hit hard. the season's first major snowstorm and blizzard. we've had as much as ten foot drifts in colorado. major interstates are shut down. i-40, which makes you from the east coast to california between amarillo and albuquerque is close the right now. we're still getting wind gusts out here 40 to 45 miles an hour. also, i-25 out of santa fe, up to the colorado line, that's shut down. if a road isn't shut down, assume you can't get there because nobody's moving basically. these roads are in bad shape. a lot of spinouts. a lot of wrecks. we saw big semis last night, joe, carrying cattle that had jackknifed on u.s. 50 between here and the dodge city, kansas area. there you go. it's a rough morning. things will get better this afternoon. as the storm heads east, once again, as we've seen so far this season, it will be rain in the d.c. metro area in a day and a half. back to you. >> we've been fortunate so far. mike seidel, thanks very much. >> we've been very lucky. not only do we not have snow

it snowed as far south as the texas panhandle and i had reports to western kansas of anywhere from 9 to 26 inches of snow. that would be nice, wouldn't it? all right, well let's talk about reality, because here's what we are left with. we'll zoom into this storm. there's very little left in terms of winter precipitation with this storm. most of it now is in the form of rain. it is headed towards kansas city, a little bit of mixed precipitation in northwest missouri. as we move eastward, it is just rain in through the great lakes, tennessee valley. we have a little cold front that is bisecting it. not super cold north of us, but a little cold. most of the rain showers kind of sticking right along the maryland p.a. border and that will be the case tonight. temperatures, we understand where the front is. it's further north, but they are in the upper 40s. everybody else south of that. 52 in rockville. 53 in arlington. 53 toward ft. belvoir. mild, but turning wet. you'll need your umbrella tomorrow. even milder on thursday and yes, another system comes at us thursday night into early frid
