here in western kansas, it was no bargain. this is garden city. not a lot of traffic out here this morning. roads have been plowed but they are icy and snow packed because what fell early yesterday froze and then we had the colder temperatures. running in the mid 20s and it is going to stay cold right on through christmas so we are guaranteed a white christmas in this part of the world. maybe more snow thursday. just about everything today is closed at this point. except for the 24-hour restaurants. other than that everybody sitting tight. it is hard to go anywhere out garden city. most of the roads here in western kansas, oklahoma panhandle, northeast new mexico, us southeast colorado, if they are not closed, they are impassable. i'm meteorologist mike seidel with the weather channel for nbc news, garden city, kansas. >> thanks, mike. that same storm is going to eventually head our way in a much different capacity but not just that storm. we have into the one but two other storms that are going to follow. we will talk about what those storms will

that's drifting. 10 to 20 inches is the highest snowfall total i've seen, east of colorado and western kansas. the worst of it this morning is now in kansas. it's slowly coming to an end. this is pretty rural out here, garden city, dodge city, colby, kansas, hayes, kansas i've been through some of these towns when i was out there tornado chasing. not a lot of people live in this area. it's mostly the truckers that are being inconvenienced by the shutdowns of the interstates. i think by later today, the storm will weaken enough that those will be opened up, and for traveling, should be okay. now, the moisture streaming out ahead of this -- typically when we get a big storm out west in december, it heads east and we're talking about snow all along it, but temperatures are so warm in the eastern half of the country, this is mostly just rain this morning coming up through st. louis, peoria, lafayette. a little, narrow sliver of snow near ft. wayne, but even there, the temperature's near 34, so it's melting when it hits the pavement. same story for northern ohio, where you may see some snowflakes,

western kansas, that's where some of the most hairy weather has been. sustained 30 miles per hour or greater since noon yesterday. so, even without the snowfall coming down, it's been blowing sideways. where it did come down. it came down two feet in pietown, new mexico, and ten inches in kenton, oklahoma. other wind gusts equally impressive. we're starting to see this wind down just a little bit, but the moisture of this is stretching off to the east and getting into chicago, pittsburgh, places like this. most of this is heading into some mild air. so, as it traverses north and east towards the lower northeast, we shouldn't see much of a problem. maybe a midst in chicago to pittsburgh and heads to the new york city area come is all rain with this particular system and then we focus to the next one diving down into the same area and pose a threat for the northeast corridor in the way of holiday travel over the next few days and then another system coming down for christmas. so, busy week ahead, once this thing winds down. kyra? >> rob, thank you so much
