kenya. it's a hostage crisis that has gone on for more than two full days in a westernized shopping mall in nairobi. how to free those by a group that has been linked to al qaeda in the past. they gunned down dozens of innocent civilians and took a number of others hostage. it's in the west gate mall this morning. they blew open a wall as part of a divisionary tactic. black smoke can be seen rising from the building. this attack began saturday after noon nairobi time. as many as 15 terrorists entered the mall, throwing grenades and opening fire on shoppers. according to officials, they are men who came from several different countries. they are believed to be trapped in a super market. the military is taking a cautious approach to prevent further loss of life. at least 62 people have been killed in the rampage including foreigners from several countries. kenyan officials said two are among those that are dead. 200 people are believed to have been hurt including five americans. the kenyan red across many are still unaccounted for. thousands were in the mall when the attack began and got out

western. >> we understand this mall was threatened by al shabaab. was there heightened security? >> reporter: there is always heightened security in kenya. the kenyan forces went to somalia in 2010 and 2011, they stepped up security because they have been threatened by a al shabaab previously. they had carried out smaller riots that were not as successful as this one. so the security forces were always at the highest possibility alert. kenyans have now become very accustomed to seeing ak-47 among security forces, bomb detectors are regular among people of elite, not to mention those living in hotels and banks and businesses and so on and so forth. so this particular complex had such security operations in place. so it's really remarkable that the intelligence failure and security forces seemed unable to stop this from happening. >> as you know, al shabaab are warning of more attacks. are there any more targets? >> al shabaab clearly are taking the fight to kenya. they have made it very clear that they will attack everything that is despised and seen as kenyan. and that means the entire population. what they have made clear is that they w
