maryland state highway administration. so often their problem areas are in the western parts of the state. not this time, it is southern maryland. part of the reason they have been getting the most snow here, but also, look, the snow has layed completely on the road. the temperatures are in the teens, and the plows are battling against trying to get the snow off the roadway. but it is a tough battle. here is video from la plata of a car that was stuck in the median , could not get out. another vehicle that we saw on 301 in waldorf sliding down the street. that is an was able to write themselves. a number of folks having trouble. the plows are out, but it is a tough battle as the temperatures are so cold. most cars that we have seen have been able to get down the road ok. one of the reasons as we come back alive, this is one of the few areas untouched by the wind. we probably have roughly three inches or snow. i try to make the snowball, look what happens, i cannot do it. it is a fluffy snow that we rarely see, the colder kind of snow. it is good news that we got back, because it is a year t

right now i walked past one in petersburg it's 9. 2 below zero in western maryland already. these numbers in the low teens and double digits are going to drop into the single digits and maybe below zero in spots by morning. 14 the morning low. ridiculously below average. temperatures here are average high 48. it will be a while. maybe sunday come to think of it. we'll hit 48. 2 below and 8 above. that's the general range of overnight temperatures combined with gusty winds and we'll put wind chills 5 to 15 below. the potential of tying or breaking low temperatures tomorrow morning. 8 is the magic number and 2 below at dulles and each one is in the range where that record can be tied for a new record established. looking forward, a couple of things to keep an eye on. the core of the cold air still to the northwest and the north westerly winds will bring the cold temperatures in. down to 8 degrees in roanoke. we'll see the combination of the winds and the cold fefrpz make it brutally cold overnight and the reason so many school systems are closing or delayed. we'll have clear s

the winter weather is even causing some school closures in parts of western maryland. chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a look at the first forecast. doug? >> hey, get ready, the front pretty much on target here blowing through the area. areas of snow showers and flurries. some rain showers all moving out as we've been explained, the cold air is lagging behind by several hours. the air overhead is cold enough to make the snow even though here at the surface, temperatures are well above freezing. 41 for example at reagan national. 36 at gaithersburg. during the afternoon, the temperatures will drop. the winds will come up. and that band of showers, snow showers and flurries will move out but the wind blown snow flurries likely to continue during the afternoon hours. in preparation of the first batch of arctic air, wind chill advisory goes in effect later this evening in areas north and west of the corridor. want out of the reach of parts of the metro region to be included later. we'll have a second bout of colder air moving on saturday and into sunday. here's t

i'm sure it's the same in north dakota as it is in western maryland. and they say you've helped me be able to do the job. they do this on their own time, and on their own dime. so what happens if we don't fund homeland security? it means that those two billion-dollar grants in emergency -- for firefighters, for port security, for local efforts and so on, will not be funded. and make no mistake for those people perhaps in the senate or in the house that says why don't we just do a continuing resolution, a continuing resolution means that grants cannot be funded. mr. president, under current law for any program if an agency is on a c.r., it cannot issue grant money at all. so that means right now they're getting ready to take the fire grant proposals. secretary jeh johnson can't even put it out to say it's now the annual time for you to come in, firefighters with your request, or fire chiefs. so we are placing america at risk. not only, you know, with the really big big big picture stuff, but ultimately the big big picture comes back home, when that terr
