still snowing in parts of eastern tennessee, in western north carolina.earlier this morning. that could climb depending on any additional ice that's fallen. i want to show awe closer look at the radar picture. this is across western maryland. eastern pennsylvania, northern new jersey, into the new york city area. that band of darker shading of blue, that is where we do have that very heavy snow coming down of up to two inches per hour. some rain, some sleet, some freezing rain could mix in with the storm system. take a look at the future radar. by midnight tonight, still snowing across portion of maryland, new jersey, up into parts of new england and eventually by 9:00 a.m. on friday, the state of maine will be looking at areas of heavy snow and something we told you earlier this morning was that we were going to see another clipper system moving through. you can see 6:00 p.m. on saturday, not expecting that much snow from that system. sain area that's already snow fatigued. we're well above average in terms of the season in terms of snow accumulation. si

. >>> way over in the western part of north carolina, tucked right underneath tennessee is the lovelylle. the 11th largest city in the state located roughly at the mouth of the french broad river and swannanoa river. along asheville's stretch of the river is a coal fired power plant, owned by duke energy headquartered in north carolina. the single largest electric power holding company in the country. early last year an environmental group in that area started looking into this site, specifically looking into the huge amounts of coal ash stored at that plant. the group was concerned the coal ash was contaminating the local groundwater. so in january of last year, they filed a notice of their intent to sue duke energy in federal court. under the federal clean water act you can do that. citizen groups can file lawsuits over environmental right violations, but there's a sort of stray thread, maybe, loose, loophole, maybe, something to worry about. they have to give the state regulators, they have to give regulators in their state 60 days' notice in case the state wants to take action on

western pennsylvania, so you're used to snow. were you surprised at what was going on in north carolina today? you've been there for a while. how unique was this, shall we say? >> north carolina snow is very different than western pennsylvania snow. we're not as e equipped for it. they had primed the roads a couple days ago but it rained and washed a lot of it away. typically in pennsylvania they salt the roads well prior. the problem in raleigh is the snow melts so quickly and refreezes so quickly that instead of just snow it's ice and people can't move the that. >> were you told this morning don't go to work, stay homewy bilow e cal authorities on the radio or television? >> i hadn't seen it. i had watched the news before i left to see what the roads would be like, and they told us the snow would probably hit between 12:00 and 2:00. so i figured i only live, you know, two miles away from where i work so once it starts i'll go ahead and leave. but in that ten-minute time span i ended up getting stuck. >> are you okay right now, natalie? how you doing? >> great. we're warm, nice and toasty warm. i'm glad to be home and safe.

western edition. at this hour, a snow and ice storm is causing havoc in the south. this is north carolina where drivers ignored warnings to stay off the roads and now they are stuck. bumper to bumper. many people are facing a night in the cold and dark. the storm has knocked out power to nearly half a million homes and businesses. nearly 100 million americans are in the path of this storm which is hitting the southeast tonight heading up to the northeast overnight. it's blamed for at least 11 deaths already. we have a team of correspondents in the storm zone. first, we're going to go to wyatt andrews in north carolina. wyatt, what's happening there? >> reporter: scott, raleigh right now is in the center of this ice storm. there's a light freezing rain falling right now, but it's expected to last another seven hours. and today, despite two days of official requests for people to stay home, raleigh itself, the capital of the state, experienced severe gridlock. this was downtown raleigh at mid-afternoon. traffic was snarled by dozens of minor accidents and by hundreds of cars that lost tract
