a massive clean up is underway in western oklahoma and iowa after overnight tornadoes swept through the country's mid- section. five people have been killed, dozens more injured. a hospital and nursing home in iowa were in the path of the storm. more than 100 tornadoes have been reported across the midwest. strong thunderstorms are still expected as far east as michigan. the latest reports though, the storm system is weakening. we'll report from oklahoma this evening where homes and buildings have been destroyed. >> some massive twisters tore through are, ripping through homes and buildings. there are reports of more than 120 tornadoes across the midwest. storm chasers even caught this rare site. >> two tornadoes. >> reporter: several people were killed including five inside this mobile home park. the storm ripped through this area in the middle of the night with little warning. >> it just hit so fast and quick that nobody had any time to react to it. >> reporter: there isn't much left of the home here. she was actually asleep in her bed when the tornado was buried down. her daughter wo

they will collide here in western texas, and also western oklahoma, bringing the threat of even more tornadic activity. large hail, damaging winds, and flash floods cannot be ruled out here, even towards new mexico, you could be seeing those flooding rains there. i also want to talk about the cold air spilling in from the north. this is bringing cooler temperatures there. winnipeg, you're only looking at a high of 8. the overnight hours there and across much of the great lakes the temperatures will likely be dropping to subfreezing, and it will make it very chilly here with the windchill. the winds will be a factor across much of the eastern seaboard. combined with the dry air is bringing the risk of fire weather up and down the coastlines there. north and south, very warm at 29. houston, 29, looking at for miami. here's our extended outlook. >>> our lead story for this hour, an 8.6 magnitude earthquake hit indonesia's sumatra island. but after four hours, the u.s. pacific tsunami warning center has lifted all tsunami watches related to it. the u.s. geological survey said the quake s

it does look like that severe threat will be continuing to linger here on thursday in texas, western oklahomathe central portions of texas there. excuse me, you'll be seeing the threat of tornadoes, large hail, high winds, up to 100 kilometers per hour could develop out of these storms as this system starts to move its way off towards the northeast. do also want to take your attention to the southeastern u.s. there is a wildfire currently burning here, near the georgia/florida border. that's producing some heavy smoke as far south as orlando and daytona beach. you're seeing reports of smoke reducing visibility there. anybody with respiratory issues across this area needs to take the proper precautions as the winds continue to blow in from the north, causing that smoke to drift towards the south. this will be accompanied by some very high temperatures out in miami, looking at 29 for your high. towards west, denver, 21. winnipeg, high of 16. overnight hours, these will be dropping below freezing. definitely need to be bundling up there towards the north. moving on to europe, a frontal system is

in the minutes after midnight as tragedy approached western oklahoma, a storm chaser got a look at the monster bearing down on woodward and yelled out a warning. >> woodward police, you need to be sounding your tore fad owe sirens now, everybody in woodward needs to take shelter. >> reporter: but the siren's transmitter was damaged by the twister and fell silent. many here were asleep. but a high school party was in full swing, and you can see the advice to run for cover was well-founded. with daylight, the measure of destruction was evident in this town of 12,000. kyle reynolds, assistant principal at woodward high school said the kids made it out of the prom safely but when he drove home, this is what he found. how many bedrooms did you have here? >> you're looking at the master bedroom, this first section of wall is lying on our bed. >> reporter: his home was totaled. >> that's somebody else's fence right there. >> reporter: this your gutter? >> that's not from my house. >> reporter: that's not. >> no, that is from somebody else's house. that's the wrong color. >> reporter: and yet

the watch area all across nebraska, into southwestern iowa, and stretching down into western parts of oklahoma that center here, particularly into central parts of kansas, is where we have the pds watches, particularly dangerous situation. this is a different animal where you get large, violent, destructive tornadoes that stay on the ground for a long period of time. the risk area issidespread, and we're just getting started with the storm system. in fact, this is going to be going on overnight tonight, including into the day tomorrow where we could look at places like central wisconsin for seeing the severe weather threat. about 5 million people in the high risk area today, about 9 million people in the red there under the risk area for a moderate chance of seeing these tornadoes. it's going to be an ugly night ahead. we'll break in as necessary. 11 tornadoes reported so far today. >> tremendous number. thank you so much. a big question that needs to be asked, what do you do? do you know what to do if a tornado is headed your way? the u.s. department is urging everyone to get a plan in place

we have a line of storms in western oklahoma, also portions of kansas.her round of storms overnight along some of these areas. during the nighttime, something that you can do if you live in high risk areas, we could be looking at dangerous conditions. go ahead and sleep in your basement or storm shelter. it's just one night and you could be looking at a life-threatening situation when you could be asleep. if you don't get the warnings, it could be dangerous. we have a number of tornado warnings in portions of oklahoma and kansas. we want to look at those, tornado watches will run through this evening and another round through the overnight hours because conditions are very favorable for thunderstorms with large hail. we're talking about reports we're getting of baseball sized hail. so that can cause damage, strong winds are expected from the thunderstorms over night and the violent long track tornadoes that can stay on the ground more than several minutes, lasting over an hour and track for miles on end. you can see the thunderstorms have fired up. we ha

the severe threat will then shift into northeast texas, southeast oklahoma, western parts of arkansastill a general thunderstorm threat right down the 35 and 45 corridors in central parts of texas. dylan? >> the nbc affiliate that's an owned and operated station in dallas-ft. worth put out on its twitter account that there has been an evacuation at love field and there was a sighting of a funnel. where is dallas-ft. worth airport, and can you verify what they are publishing? >> well, dallas-ft. worth airport is right in between dallas and ft. worth, close to arlington. so it's right in the middle of the metroplex, and there is this line of storms that is now coming through. now, it's not uncommon to get little spin-ups with a more ordinary line of storms. oftentimes there is sheer right along the leading edge of those lines, and that will develop a little spin. what we are not seeing in downtown dallas right now is a very well-developed super cell storm of the type that pro dudu those more long track tornadoes, the ones we saw on the south side of dallas that must have lasted about 25
