we saw what happened to the mills in western pennsylvania. bethlehem steel, no longer. these are the big names that dominated the steel industry. most of them are gone. the steel industry is still here. pittsburgh is revitalized. there is a lot more there, too. capitalism works. free markets work. you have to believe in it. [applause] i can understand how some people can panic at a time of crisis and believe that government is the answer. it was the wrong thing for them to do to bail out wall street. i can understand why people did it. what i cannot understand is why some people would bail out wall street and use a very different measure to not bail out detroit. if you will bailout wall street, and take care of your friends on wall street, and you do not have a principle against government bailouts, why do you pick one and not the other? you can criticize me for not supporting the detroit bailout. i did not support any bailout. i did not support bailouts in my own community. when i grew up in the steel town of western pennsylvania, butler, pennsylvania, as he mentioned, my grandfather was a coal miner. i knew that was the wealth. it wasn't great wealth, it wasn't opulent wealth, but and e able to participate in civic and community organizations and not having to work two or three jobs. they could participate in the health of their community. which was vital for the health of our country. and so manufacturing to me is a key to that. president obama is all about equality of results. i'm about equality of opportunity. i'm not about equality of result when it comes to income inequality. there is income inequality in america. there always has been. and hopefully, and i do say that, there always will be. why? because people rise to different levels of success based on what they contribute to society and to the marketplace. and that's as it should be. and we shouldn't have a society who has a president who envies or creates class wearfare or eny between one group and another. we should celebrate as we do here in detroit. you celebrate success. statutes and monuments. buil

altmire, thank you for the work you've done in western pennsylvania. at one time, when i was growing up, it was the center of the american steel industry and manufacturing there and to the immediate west in indiana and on, i want to put up this chart because it demonstrates the challenge that we face an the opportunity that we have. this chart speaks of the 12 years, six million american manufacturing jobs lost, way back, let's go back about 20, 25 years ago, there were just under 20 million manufacturing jobs in america. over the years it was up and down with a slight decrease an then beginning around the year 2000, we began to see a precipitous decline, basically the outsourcing of american jobs this egreat manufacturing heart an heartbeat of america just began to slow down to a rhythm where now we are down to just over 11 million manufacturing jobs. . this right here is the challenge that this house faces. and when we start with what the what the president has suggested, we start with r&d and that's where the new ideas and products have been develop

we went through the very tough difficult time in western pennsylvania. of seeing most of the mills close there. big companies. bethlehem steel is not around. what happened? what happened was, the marketplace worked. look at southwestern pennsylvania, pittsburgh, it's growing, it's prosperous. steel is still there, it's now different. it's all over the country and in a different way. i believe from that experience markets actually do work. i didn't support the wall street bailout. i didn't support detroit. mitt romney supported his friends on wall street and turned his backs on the people of detroit. i say that because he support the concept of bailouts. >> you talked about his friends on wall street, you said yesterday, you said mitt romney sounds like a member of occupy wall street, what did you mean by that? >> in his tax plan, when he laid out what he was going to do, cutting rates. he said that he'll reduce the tax rates and put the highest rates in his tax code at 28% which is the top rate that i put in my plan, so i welcomed that. but what he did is

i grew up in western pennsylvania. in a manufacturing town. it is very much like the towns here in southeast michigan, where we had the kind of neighborhoods and values and opportunities for everyone. to be able to go off and go to work and work hard and have an incentive to work hard because there were great jobs. there were strong neighborhoods, strong families. we had an opportunity to really build a great and strong community. and building a great and strong country. that is how america is unique and the world. america is a great country from the bottom up. all the different community organizations, they all sprung up because we believe in the idea of a free people and our ability to provide for ourselves and our families. that is the secret. that is the difference of america when it comes to what makes us successful. it is the secret sauce, if you will. it is the secret sauce to what makes america a unique country. it is so hard to replicate because america was built that way. we are a discovered country. people forget how young we are. t
