. >> fortunately, weather has been gorgeous in the holiday in tokyo, but things are changing in westernapan. you can see clouds are covering parts of the region, heavy rain is likely to affect western japan, especially into thursday, up to 160 millimeters of rain is likely, and the rain likely moves into central japan and tokyo friday. more wet weather is expected into next week because a tropical storm is approaching. we have a tropical storm right now, packing winds of only 65 kilometers per hour. it's still a minimal tropical storm, but the sea surface temperatures are warm at 30 degrees, so the system be intensify to a severe tropical storm and get very close to the southwestern islands of japan by e early next week. that circle is large meaning it's hard to predict where it's going at the moment, but highly likely it's impacted directly or indirectly. if it hits japan directly, it could be the fifth named storm to make land fall, more than average. across the southern hemisphere, yesterday, we had significant flooding in the eastern end of north island of new zealand. weather is qu

tokyo are seeing warm and fair conditions. meteorologist robert speta tells us how it's looking elsewhere. >> catherine, what we are going to be seeing is really this area of low pressure, which in westernging the showers. i know if you were in tokyo the last several days the weather has been decent. but that low is tracking off towards the east and already is bringing problems. in some areas we've seen well over 60 millimeters in a one-hour span. upwards of 347 millimeters in a 24 hour period in kyushu. we have video. the rain definitely coming down. a slow commute during the early morning hours due to this unstable atmosphere. several locations have seen over 200 millimeters. actually evacuation advises have been in place -- about 150,000 residents have been advised. no orders at this point but there is the threat of further flooding. in some locations my zachy we are seeing more precipitation. the next several hours the storm system is pulling off towards the northeast n. tokyo in the afternoon and evening hours the showers are going to start moving into the area before this eventually starts to work its way off there towards the east. remember, this is nothing tropical but we do hav

tokyo with rainy weather on thursday. now, in the middle east, dust storms are covering many parts of the western areas and it's causing numerous problems. we have some video coming out of several countries there. a heavy sandstorm swept across parts of the middle east on tuesday. at least two people were killed and hundreds were hospitalized in lebanon. clouds of dust also engulfed syria, jordan, and cyprus where aircraft were diverted dropping visibility to 500 meters. dust storms frequently hit the middle east during summer but concentrate on iraq and the gulf region. some say this year the sand is very strong unlike previous years. and some shops and restaurants remained closed on tuesday. now, take a look at this satellite. this was the satellite imagery as of monday. you can see clouds, sand is covering many parts of syria. into tuesday, the sand was extending into the south. poor visibility will likely continue throughout this week. meanwhile, the skies are gray over the south of italy because a significant storm system is located. and the same system caused deadly flooding over southeast portions of spain the other day.

tokyo you'll be seeing decent weather but we are looking at a little bit of a change in the forecast for western areas of japan. we have going on this area of low pressure which is now coming out of eastern china. it's starting to move into the korean peninsula, looking at showers across this area. as we go ahead into wednesday evening, parts of kyushu will be working into the region and this whole low pressure area will work its what i to the northeast. and then on top of, that we have our latest tropical system. this is the 21st named storm system of 2015 here in the western pacific and it is continuing to track off here towards the northwest. winds right now 65 kilometers per hour so it's on the low end of the spectrum here as far as tropical systems go. but it's expected to continue to intensify up to a typhoon status by the weekend. really the thing with this one, it depends on its interaction with that low pressure area i just mentioned that will be working its way across japan if this interact with the southern islands of japan or it could recurve and even impact tokyo by early next week.
