we are seeing the live shot from portions of south western virginia into western virginia. snow down there. as far as totals go, this is what we think. first i'll show you the rest of the storm. there's the heavy rain. now this was a line of thunderstorm activity there. may be still thunderstorm embedded in there, but not a lot of lightning. now the snow fall total tell us, by the end of the whole event saturday evening, we believe the washington area will get 16 to 24 inches of snow. this is going to put it in the top ten for washington snow fal. down to the south and west, that's the sweet spot, 22- inches and more. but that's well south and west of our area. and off to the south and east, somewhat lighter amount, but still major, 8 to 167 inches. that could -- 8 to 16 inches. that could be held down by sleet. snow during the late morning, early afternoon, 3 to 6 inches during the day, 35 for the high. tonight and then end this here, tonight winter storm warning in effect. snow very heavy tonight. accumulations tonight and overnight, 10 to 15 inches. 28 for the low and th

down toward dc and western maryland. northern virginia are. and this watch stretches all the way back over parts of west virginia, hoe he hoe, into indiana. so a lot of folks will be affected by this. as we see the storm push in. for the weekend. now, what are we talking about? well, i am thinking nitrite now, is looking at anywhere from about 16 to 22 inches of snow. across the baltimore corridor down through i-95, dc, northern virginia, sterling and those areas, as you get to western he maryland as much of a foot and a half as well. crossing the bay, it looks like five to 10 inches, and then southern tip of maryland, charles county. about five to 10 inches. and then in a mixed form. in a mix of sleet and snow out closer to the ocean. this is a possible total. totals could be higher potentially or lower. depending on the track of the storm. and how much moisture it really pulls in. right now it looks like a foot and a half, to almost 2 feet of snow at a good potential right now. so looks pretty promising. so be prepared. talking about what's

>> good morning, on regional radar we are seeing light snow in western virginia and southwestern westirginia. the leading edge of an evolving storm that is just getting organized and coming our way. temperatures around the region in the teens in the suburbs, mid-20s in washington and right near the bay. elsewhere, in the teens to near 10 days, a cold start. light snow by early afternoon. mayba couple of inch by 6:00 p.m. by dawn tomorrow could have eight inches of new snow. perhaps an additional eight inches before it ends wednesday evening with strong winds that may cause significant drifting of the snow on wednesday evening into thursday morning. these are the total amounts i'm expecting by the storm by 7:00 p.m. wednesday. a large area of 12 to 18 inches from the shenandoah valley, panhandle of west virginia, across northern virginia, the district of columbia, into montgomery and prince george's county, and into the central eastern shore. 6 to 12 inches southern maryland, northern neck of virginia. lower eastern shore. more farther north. that's the way it looks now. >> thank you.

we have had blizzard warnings go up in the higher elevations of the appalachians for virginia and western maryland and most of maryland wrapping around the metro. right now no blizzard warnings for the metro, montgomery county in to the district and then i will have to check and see if prince georges is in that. but toward anne arundel and baltimore county and northern maryland in the appalachians and wave women blizzard warnings have gone in to affect there. that's the latest look at the blizzard warnings showing up in the bright purple shades and to me, i don't believe anne arundel is included. so portions and anne arundel not included in the blizzard warning right now but baltimore and to the west that's where the blizzard warning is in affect. everyone else is under the blizzard storm warning. we will have more on the weather terrace here. >> anne arundel is part of the blizzard warning. that just came out. down through baltimore and anne arundel county along with the counties in the mountains blizzard warnings. expecting those frequent winds above 35 miles an hour along with the blow

higher elevations of western maryland and west virginia. this is a powerful storm and as it gets closer to us overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning and it's at its peak, that's when our winds are really going to be dangerously strong. 31 tonight is the temperature here in washington. 28 for gaithersburg. 30 degrees for ulles. the wind chill values as you might expect into the teens tonight. some places may even get down into the single digits. temperatures to the north binghamton 19 degrees. they're going to get a lot of snow. central park in new york city 28 degrees. they're gog to get a lot of snow. maybe approaching 10 to 12 inches in the city before it's all said and done. snowfall accumulations, here's the bull's eye. up to the north of us eastern sections of new york, that's where they're going to pick up as much as 24 inches of snow possible but a lot of it will be blowing around. so the drifts will be 4 to 6 feet high in places up there. it really does shut off right as it gets down to the metro but there's some indication to

it's right in there through western north carolina and up to central and western sections of virginia. we will watch that real closely and see if that actually pushes that transitional line up closer to us. you know if you spent any time in d.c. for the winter, we are talking about that rain-snow line. it looks like overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning, it may get fairly close to us. it doesn't look like the rain- snow line will come through the city. our snowfall totals in the city and north and west shouldn't be cut down by that. farther to the south and southeast there may be a period tomorrow morning where that is happening. we are getting a lot of reports out of eastern sections of west virginia for pretty good snowfall totals. you notice the high returns here, the yellow and oranges, that's moderate rainfall. but then it crosses over to the cold air and becomes heavy snow. same thing to the south as well. we have yet to get a heavy snow band through d.c. later on this evening and overnight, that is all going to change because this storm will be pretty much in its mature

to the west, west virginia and western maryland, you see the white and pink. even though we are below southern maryland, you can see that as well that is not all hitting the ground. it will push on in later this morning and especially midday today. around noon is where we should see the snow locally. but the heaviest snow will be between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.. the best chance of accumulation, between 18 and 24 inches, with a chance of 25 to 29. that is possible, with a slight chance of hitting 30 inches in a few locations here and there. that chance does exist in it is not likely, but the possibility is there. let's go back to alisa with the morning drive. on route 7 here in tysons corner, traffic has picked up in the last hour. >> we are noticing that too, as far as interstate travel. we're seeing if they can put us on rush-hour mode early. we are going to have on our website, soon, wjla.com, an early-release schedule for an tsmta buses. this is the second grocery store we have flown over in the last 10 or 15 minutes, and they are filling up quickly. >> lis

the snow on the map and green represents the rain, heavy rain across the western slopes the appalachian mountains, west virginia, heavy rain tidewater. on the lower chesapeake bay, they just changed the gale warning to a storm warning, meaning higher wind. off the coast, baltimore county, shipping channel, they just issued a very rare winter time a hurricane force wind warning. the storm is intensifying, the rate of the snowfall, the wind, all will increase. the worst of the storm tonight, at 10:00, 6:00 in the morning. centreville 2 inches, columbia a little bit less than 2 inches. we will continue to update the reports through the night. what will happen next? so far, we have had 27.3 inches this winter. these are the top winters over the past five, six years. we are clearly in the lead. will we wind up wi the most snow this winter? we are well on the way. if we get 20 inches from this storm, that puts us in second place for all time snowiest winters since the records have been kept. the most snow was 7099, jefferson washington storm, 55 inches of snow falling in washington. that is the latest. -- the most sn
