wfaa reporter rebecca lopez was communicating with mike mclelland before his murder.u taking the time to speak us with. let me just start with this. i know you have been e-mailing with the prosecutor. did he give you any indication that he was concerned about his safety? >> not at all. in fact, we got an e-mail from him three days before he was murdered. and there was no indication that he was concerned at all. in fact, right after mark hassy's murder, he came out and said we're going to come and hunt down. we're going to hunt down the person that did this. we're going to dig you out of your hole. he was not afraid at all. there was obviously extra security measures that were put in place in kaufman county after hassy's murder. and so there were some security measures. but he didn't seem concerned. in fact, in one of the e-mails he also talks about hassy and whether or not he was concerned about any of the cases that he had prosecuted and he said he wasn't scared of anyone that he had prosecuted and wasn't living in any state of paranoia. and so there didn't seem to b

the abc affiliate locally wfaa is reporting according to their sources, a .233-caliber rifle was used and approximately 14 rounds were fired. to have the assistant district attorney and district attorney of the same small texas county shot to death within eight weeks of each other seems like a coincidence if it turns out to be a coincidence. but in terms of connecting the killings, the detail about the shell casings is different. either there were no shell casings at the first killing, but reportedly, they were all over the scene at the second killing. differences in details like that has led the speculation that maybe the killers in the first case were more experienced or maybe we're dealing with two different sets of killers for the assistant d.a. and the d.a. we're also told the fbi is looking into a link between the colorado prison chief's killing and the first killing. they had already been looking into that link before the district attorney was killed. they have produced nor evidence to think they are linked, at least that they have made public. one loose thread that everybody d

in an e-mail to wfaa-tv, mcclelland said hasse had received no threats from a prison gang and his work on aryan brotherhood cases was minimal. >> ed, thank you. still unknown, who killed mike mcclelland and his wife. we're now joined by cnn contributor and former fbi assistant director tom fuentes. tom, thanks for joining us. you've been talking to your sources, several agencies are involved including the fbi in this investigation. does anybody have any serious leads at this point? >> no, not yet, jake. i think the important factor here is that, especially the last part of the last piece, kaufman county district attorney's office, both mcclelland and hasse, did have minimal involvement in the most recent task force that investigated the aryan brotherhood of texas. that case was led by the bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms, the indictments returned last november of 35 people in houston, texas. and really that was a federal task force, state and local task force with atf, fbi, marshals, dea, department of homeland security, texas department of public safety, a number of county sheri

a source tells our affiliate out of dallas, wfaa that ballistic tests are being done on weapons found in a storage locker room that was rented for williams and reports indicate that these weapons are similar to the those used in the murders. cnn's ed lavendera following the developments for us this morning live in dallas. ed, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, brooke. we've been reporting for some time we knew that investigators have been poring through cases that mark hasse, the assistant d.a. and mike mclelland might have prosecuted that someone might be in the files they would need to take a closer look at and that's where eric williams came up. this house belongs to a former kaufman county justice of the peace named eric williams, on friday, investigators spent hours combing through the house. then on saturday those investigators descended on this storage unit 15 miles away. several local media outlets report investigators found 20 weapons inside the storage unit that was rented for eric williams. and investigators also discovered this crowne victoria, a police style vehicle

in an interview to wfaa-tv, he said hasse's work on aryan brotherhood cases was minimal. >> stratfordnce and he's a veteran law enforcement officer. you have an individual who can work by himself to conduct some loose surveillance. if you look at the assistant district attorney that was attacked after he parked his car in the parking lot and was walking to work. those patterns are predictable and they're not complex murders to carry out. >> with no significant leads, investigators must look at all possible i, could it be another organized group like a drug cartel or one person with a violent vendetta. >> wolf, this is what makes this situation so complex and daunting daun daunting daunt for investigators. going through the case files that might connect mark hassy and mike mclellan is a daunting and laboring task for these investigators, going through the thousands and thousands of cases that they might have had handled and it's a pain staking, slow process because the vendetta and the grudge could have come from anywhere, wolf? >> ed la van der is is live on the scene. very much and t

meanwhile, our affiliate wfaa reports that the plant was fined back in 2006 for having an inadequateement plan in place. let's talk a little bit more about all of this with our senior medical correspondent, elizabeth cohen. first of all, hospitals. west, texas. small town. under 3,000 people. not far from waco where they do have some significant hospitals. here in boston, for example, there are major hospitals within a few miles of the bombing that occurred. bombings that occurred. it's different there. >> it is a very different situation, wolf. we're standing right where the marathon bombs went off. there are six level one trauma centers within two miles of us. six within two miles. in texas, these people had to travel 23 miles to the hospital in texas, hillcrest. that is not a level one trauma center. it's a center that practices for mass casualties, that drills for it, but it's not level one and it's just one hospital. the contrast really couldn't be greater. >> talk a little bit about this type of ammonia gas that potentially could be deadly, but could cause some serious problems
