brannan wharf is a new wharf parallel to the embarcadero promenade shown on the screen. at the end and extending for up to 800 feet and up to pier 38. the wharf includes several major components that originateed in the public design process and part of the bcdc permitting including a neighborhood green which consists 400 shape lawn that you see, a walk way and seating and structure and active interpretive structure that illustrates the tide in the bay. san francisco history and taking the shape of the pier in the original location on the south end of the project and inlay of track and interpretive exhibits and mostly flat and raised planter of 18-inches in height and surround by the sea wall. the openness is to orient them towards the bay and the neighborhood in embarcadero. the project addresses sea level rise for a very substantial -- 840 feet section of the waterfront by gently tilting up from the embarcadero promenade and 1 foot at the north end and 2 feet on the south end and concrete curb on the edge and another foot there and we pick up that sea level rise protect

these improvement were driven by the fisherman's wharf community. without the support of all the businesses here, we wouldn't be standing here today. today we have the opportunity to recognize the individuals and groups who played a part and then we'll officially reopen this beautiful vibrant new corridor. now, i would like to introduce our first speaker. you know, our mayor has earned a reputation as a leader who brings people together and gets things done. as a former city administrator, he gets it. all the city infrastructure is paramount in creating jobs. our mayor is a great coordinator of these complex projects. the dozens of departments and community groups and businesses that are lending their time to give input. when you have someone who cares that much and dedicated to fostering a collaborative networking environment, public spaces get done. they get done in a timely manner and the city gets to reap the benefits for many many years. we are glad he's here today, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our mayor, mayor ed lee. brannon street wharf today.ne we had the privilege of opening up just up north jefferson street promenade. february earlier this year, we did the james cruise ship terminal, the cruise ship terminal at pier 27. of course, last november we all did a lot of great celebration just a little bit more south here at head park, 22 acres of open space. we're literally honoring our open space obligations and doing it the right way. this particular project is impressive not only for its beauty and opening up more space, but it does in a seismically safe way and in a sustainable way accommodate some 75 years of projected sea level lies for our city. and that's incredible because we always are having to pay attention to all of our environment around our city. we're three quarters the bay. and, so, that's a respectful thing. we do it on ocean beach. we do it on the long golden gate. our maritime. of course, here in our waterfront. it's all also about history, not just with otis redding iii, not with the 150 years here, but th

because here we have a little bit of something of everything, in fisherman's wharf. it has been part of the port since its inception that is how we ate, and how we did commerce and how we paid for the fish we ate with gold but nonetheless we subsifted on fish and the agriculture that was born around the bay and san francisco to feed the miners who were farmers and to create a new economy for san francisco and haven't we brilliantly and completely made new economies and so many knew that we have to name the latest new economy of the economy of invention and creativity and isn't that what we were doing in the gold rush and so it was stunning to be here with all of you who have made this possible. in 1900, the community worked with us to move up here in this area of a water front, and more of a lagoon area where we could congregate better and save the area where fisherman's wharf had been for the commerce that was needed to sustain our city. as the most of the logistics changed and as the needs changed as a community it was fisherman's wharf that helped us to envision w

fisherman's wharf. it has been somewhat silently decaying over time, and the fisherman's wharf's comment district had the thought they would like to replace it -- rene anytime -- oh you are ahead of me -- with something more durable but keep it -- it's always been in its iconic format if you will. fisherman's wharf community benefit district has been focused on a series of improvements and beautification as we know that the jefferson street public realm but also this great new crab wheel. the crab wheel is a little bit more environmentally friendly as well and it is now using led lighting. it's a near identical of the original crab wheel sign and it was completed by a company named arrow signs. it is constructed out of aluminum to avoid rust and durable materials and the new lighting is donated by general electric which is really terrific and we are really pleased about that, and i want to thank the community benefit district for coming forward with the projected and funded by the benefit district and t

the community that our water front peers and our wharfs. this is the story of our city.ur port has really defined our past as i think that we all know, the first 49ers came right here to this spot to build this city, during world war ii, our military ships were recommissioned, right here from our port. we know that our friends from labor as the mayor said, built our city, starting here with this water fort and this is the story of our city and we also know that the water front in the port defines who we are and it is amazing in 2013, if you just walk along the water front in my district, you will start at the fisherman's wharf street scape improvements and to the cruise ship terminal that we just cut the ribbon for and you walk down to the terminals and the ports where america's cup will entertain a million, international visitors within a few months. walk down a couple more blocks to piers 15, 17, where we are going to see a half a million kids come to go all the way down to what we know that will be the next site of the warrior's arena and down to the ballpark and the

caltrain to the wharf, will it go all along the embarcadero to pier 39 or whatever the last one is? >> yes, it will. so currently there are historic streetcars that go from market to the north or from market to the south. so this will be the one that will actually combine the two. we have had calls for this from various constituencies for some time now. and this is our chance to pilot it during the events. so mta has been putting into service some of the double-ended historic streetcars that can operate in both directions without a full-loop turnaround. >> now will those be running just during the event, during the america's cup event or will pilot hours be for other parts of the day or other times? >> it's currently scheduled to be piloted during the events. though, you know, as i mentioned with positive legacy, if there is a demand for that type of service, that can justify the expense of putting it into service, that is what we want to test going forward. so if there is a constituency that would look to use that longer term, we would look to meet that demand. >> my other question

the jefferson street project which was opened a couple of weeks ago and of course fisherman's wharf and looks very successful and predict from last night and getting praise. we opened the promenade here and a project funded by the 2008 general obligation bond and successful and enjoys the best views of alcatraz from anywhere around and the ferry arch. one that is up and coming that will start construction in november what is known as the plaza in front of the cruise terminal a 2-acre addition out there. this will accomplish many things. one will allow non cruise passengers to enjoy a cruise experience in the city as ships pull up to the space and servesace the court to the cruise terminal building and buffers the transportation functions of a cruise terminal. we are looking involve to bring this on line. funding comes from the general obligation bond of 2012. pier seven and one of the public spaces twped in the late 80's, very popular. you see it in travel magazines and always an icon in san francisco. the plaza and another plaza space and serves a civic function. many events are held t

the brandon street wharf, a port project, which is going to be a good viewing location for two of the team bases taking the boats out of the water. similarly, the pier 43 promenade is an area where there is going to be -- they have taken down some of the pier and added a new public amenity. we have improved the crosswalk in front of the exploratorium on the embarcadero on green tv an area that was a very arched turn and speed could provide a dangerous path of travel for those crossing the street the muni erline from the cal train station to fisherman's wharf. this was a pilot project during the event. this is an accessible historic streetcar and the mini platforms, along the embarcadero are often chained off and those chains will come down to access the historic streetcars in the summer and we have changed some of the signal timing and some of the streetcars themselves to make that happen. and also bike sharing, something that we have been talking for a long time. where you can check out a bicycle, like a library book for a half an hour, an hour or a day and return it to a different l
