today in the bay's kristi smith is live with more on that wha that means. >> good morning. this is the largest survey of its kind. it was done in 2009 and it does show a huge spike in illegal drug use. it also makes the correlation between that and an increase in marijuana use, but also an increase in ecstasy and meth use. a 9% increase that the director of the office of national drug policy believes may be tied to the growing number of states approving medicinal marijuana and attitudes about drug-related arm. marijuana is still illegal and the federal government indicated it would not prosecute seller who is follow state rules. california voters decided whether to legalize the drug and the survey doesn't distinguish between medicinal or casual use. other results show a 40% increase in ecstasy use and a 60% jump in the number of meth users. a pro marijuana legalization advocate weighed in and believes it proves that the government's war on marijuana fail and it's really time for sensible marijuana laws. on a positive note, cocaine use is way down, about 37%. reporting live
