. >> reporter: the president asked new town mother francine wheeler to give the speech. her 6-year-old son, ben, was murdered in his classroom during the sandy hook shooting in december. she was vi visibly shaken during her very powerful address. >> we have to convince the senate to come together and pass common sense gun responsibility reforms that will make our communities safer and prevent more tragedies like the one we never thought would happen to us. >> reporter: wheeler is among one of the many faces we've seen in washington this week as victims' families have been lobbying and attending the senate debate to allow a vote on the proposed gun law. some lawmakers such as mitch mcconnell and mike lee feel this isn't getting to the heart of the problem. they say government shouldn't punish law-abiding citizens who exercise their second amendment rights. this legislation is more like an impulsive bandaid, not addressing mental health regulations. >> my concern is that it restricts the rights of law-abiding citizens an does little or nothing to deter the kind of gun viol

. >> reporter: david wheeler along with the families of seven other newtown victims will travel to washington tonight with the president on air force one and will join the white house lobbying effort this week. it's an orchestrated media campaign designed to restore the moment for reform and counter the efforts of the pro gun lobby which stalled that momentum. vice president biden with police officials at the white house tomorrow and leading a gun safety discussion thursday on nbc. in between a rare policy speech by the first lady condemning gun violence in her hometown of chicago. all week the newtown families will be lobbying, senator by senator hoping overwhelming public support for increased background checks will convince congress to buck the powerful gun lobby, the nra. this weekend the nra called the bill congress is considering a threat to the rights of law-abiding gun owners. but the president has called on congress simply to act. >> we need a vote.
