it happened on northbound 880 right before the whipple road exit. amy hollyfield is live in heyward with new information. amy? >> reporter: hi, kristen. we've been watching all morning. it's a bus busy thoroughfare. last night -- it's a very busy thoroughfare. last night traffic was slow and now look at it behind me at 11:00 this morning, it's still because of an accident that happened 45 minutes ago. the key is to adjust and last night the chp said the bus did not. it was going faster than the flow of traffic. the deadly accident happened at 10:40 and led to the shutdown of northbound 880 in heyward for almost eight hours. investigators say one bus started it all. >> we believe that there was a tour bus in the middle lane, and it came up to stop-and-go traffic. it collided with the vehicle that was in front of it. >> reporter: the driver of that car was killed, but the bus didn't stop. >> the tour bus continued on, hit another vehicle and pushed that vehicle into the back of a semi truck. >> reporter: the driver of that second car was also killed.

we're tracking a couple of problems, we'll take it out to the roads 101, this is right near whipple.nd you can see in that southbound direction we are definitely dealing with a backup. we have three lanes blocked with this crash just coming in. we have speeds that dip down below 10 miles per hour as you are approaching the scene and traffic quickly backing up clear into san mateo to 92. so give yourself some extra time. use 280 as an alternate or el camino but definitely seeing those delays build. here's a live look. you can see emergency crews are right at the scene there. and they do have those three lanes blocked and forcing all the traffic to veer on over towards that far left lane just to get by. so it will be slow going as you head in through redwood city. we continue to see those delays build on the san mateo bridge. just getting out of hayward to foster city. san mateo that's going to start really backing up. we were looking so good across the span but now in the red for drivers heading westbound as they are going to have a difficult time as they try to transition onto southb
