murder is an everyday occurrence, but bill whitaker reports what happened there over the weekend was especially upsetting. >> reporter: even in this border city where violent death is so common, this hit home. three teenaged boys gunned down in a hail of bullets as they looked at cars at a dealership in juarez, mexico. two of them american citizens. 16-year-old carlos mario gonzalez bermudez and juan carlos echeverri, 15. both had attended cathedral high right across the border in el paso, texas. >> we always think that bad things only happen to bad guys but it's right there on the streets. >> i can't imagine that there's a single family on either side of the border who has not been affected by the violence in juarez. >> reporter: and the violence in juarez is breathtaking. more than 3,000 people killed last year, 253 so far this year. almost seven a day in an escalating turf war turned death match between two rival drug cartels. >> if you're looking at this from a pure body count perspective, the trending indicates that we should have more killings in mexico this year than last year

whitaker. -- thank you. >> dan murray -- murphy, stakeholder in the eastern neighborhoods. i was appointed to be on the eastern neighborhood infrastructure finance work group, which was actually the group that recommended this half -- this ifd tool for transitioning areas in san francisco, so i have been very involved in the background. recently, i was voted by the members to represent the neighborhood cac on this committee, which is piloting this incredibly important financing tool in the rincon hill area. i think the policies that staff has developed in consultation with people like me representing the public are right on point. i think it is a great program. i would be remiss if i did not say in the context of being on the eastern neighborhood cac, i look forward in the not too distant future of working with this type of tool in the eastern neighborhood. i recognize the -- that rincon hill is a pilot area, but i hope we do not wait five years to be able to do this. this is a growth area for san francisco. private sector development for close to 30 years now. i can tell y

my name is jamie whitaker and i'm a resident of the rincon hill neighborhood. i think what i need to say at this particular juncture is that for 20 years people have been moving to the rincon hill neighborhood. a lot of young professionals who want to walk to work rather than driver, or bicycle or use transit and also a lot of retirees who want to live active lives, to enjoy the arts and entertainment offered by san francisco. there's about 300 kids living in the area today. and i hope several more. but without parks for those children to be able to develop their muscles, their coordination, and without safe sidewalks, you know, remember, there's a $ -- 260,000 cars going across the bay bridge every day. we know that going into it. it's not going anywhere. we want to work -- walk to work bad enough i guess to put up with the air quality and the traffic that's present. and you also know that rincon hill sits between the bay bridge and the financial district, so we're sort of ground zero for traffic congestion. last week when the sand was spilled on the lower dec

cbs news correspondent bill whitaker has that story. >> reporter: a crowd of cameras captured lindsaythouse, facing a new judge and a new criminal complaint that could land her behind bars for up to three years. >> plea of not guilty. >> reporter: through her attorney lohan pled not guilty to stealing the $2500 necklace she was photographed wearing. she says it's all a misunderstanding. the judge warned her she's now facing a felony and said he won't tolerate more bad behavior. >> you need to follow the laws just like everybody else. you're no different than anyone else. so please, don't push your luck. >> reporter: lohan has been accused of stealing in the past. in january 2008, she was spotted in this $11,000 mink coat, the coat's owner claimed lohan took it from a new york club like the necklace in this case, the coat was quietly returned. last april, lohan was caught on camera wearing a missing rolex, valued at $35,000. but in each case, lohan was not charged with a crime. she's now violated her probation, stemming from a pair of drunk driving arrests in 2007. >> she's met regular

. >> in the early part of your book, you psych whitaker chambers as having an impact on your life. >> the book "witness" was an important book and i read it at an important time in my life. i was in college, and i watched the mccarthy hearings and they had an impact on me. it was the opportunity to see the congress going beyond its proper role. >> what was it about that whole episode? >> the cold war was on, and here was a man it was a communist, a confessed communist, and the hearings in the congress, there was alger hiss on the one side, he was attractive and had gone to the nine schools, and no one was supporting him. when it all sorted out, it turns out that witter chambers was correct and alger hiss had known him and had been a communist. that twist, what everyone seemed to think was not the case, was helpful. also at the time the soviet union was aggressive and expanding in several continents. there was concern about the influence of communism in the world, and i was studying government and political science in school. so it had an effect. >> are there other things like that tha
