is the director of "rebirth," jim whitaker.morning, alex. >> talk to me about the concept of the film and how you came up with this idea. >> i visited ground zero a month after september 11th with my wife and i was there looking at the debris and the wreckage and i had this obviously this sense of dread and anxiety. but as i looked around, i started to kind of have an imagination that the place might look different one day and had a sense actually for a moment, a sense of hope, and i thought how could i bring that experience of that dread and anxiety and hope to an audience in a short period of time? and i just decided the best way to do it would be to literally show it, put up cameras around ground zero that would take a frame of film every five minutes 24 hours a day and follow the site as it progressed and eventually begin a process of following five people, once a year, every year in interviews over a ten-year period. so the film's about the physical and emotional healing of the site over time. >> that's an extraordinary co

bill whitaker in carson city has learned more about the gunman. >> reporter: nevada national guard member miranda mcelhiney died of her wounds. also killed were heath kelly, christian riege, and civilian florence gunderson. >> in a few short hours we lost the same number of soldiers we lost in the entirety operations iraqi and enduring freedom so it hit real hard. >> reporter: the blow was delivered by 32-year-old eduardo sancion, who had no prior criminal history but was committed to a mental health facility by police in 2000. >> his family has indicated that there is a history of mental illness. that is continuing to be investigated. >> reporter: sancion pulled into the ihop parking lot tuesday morning and immediately opened fire with an assault rifle and walked toward a table at the rear where five national guard members were eating breakfast. dozens of frantic 911 calls describe the panic. >> reporter: police say sancion, who worked at his family's grocery store, left no notes behind. they doubt he was targeting the national guard members. >> while numerous gardens men were obviously

. >> what a film, jim whitaker. the director of rebirth. i watched it last night.ish someone had given me the heads up, i need kleenex. in an ins prague al way. we met tanya who lost her fiancee, one of five people you chronicle in this doc. can you begin with ton i can't and run down the five individuals we meet in your film. >> sure. tanya lost her fiancee and her story is really about letting go and the possibility of love and actually coming to a place where she can actually fall in love and have a family. ling was on the impact floor. ling young and she sustained burns over about a third of her body. hers is kind of a struggle of the physical loss that happened. and then what's great about her, is the sort of spirit within her that emerges where she realizes, you know, i can look at life in a different way and become a different person. next a young boy, he was 15 at the time and through the course of the film, we watch him grow up. he becomes a man. brian lions is a construction worker. he goes down to the site in order to find his brother who he lost and bas

bill whitaker is in the center that is tracking the satellite and, bill, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, scott, i'm here at the aerospace mission analysis center, where scientists are tracking the final orbits of this satellite minute by minute. now, their best estimate now is that it will start to fall to earth around midnight eastern time, plus or minus three hours, and california now is in the cross hairs. this video shot by a french sky watcher shows the bus-sized satellite slowly tumbling in its final orbits above earth. >> it should fall sometime today but there's uncertainty around that. and the uncertainty means that it could really fall basically anywhere on the planet. >> reporter: what scientists do know is that most of it will break apart and burn up as it plummets through earth's atmosphere. some two dozen fragments weighing as much as 300 pounds are likely to survive reentry. manmade space debris falls to earth all the time, but with three quarters of the planet covered by water, the odds a piece of this satellite will hit any one person are astronomical:

bill whitaker has the latest on that. >> reporter: scott, the power went out around 3:40 pacific time this afternoon and, as you said, it is widespread. across all of san diego county, southern orange county, into northern mexico, baja peninsula, affecting the city of tijuana and east into arizona and it's affecting millions and millions of people. as you might expect, it's causing great concern. power company officials have urged people, they have stressed that this is not an act of terrorism. they call it a system failure, a major transmission failure. now, this comes in the midst of a tremendous searing heat wave across the southwest, temperatures as high as 113 degrees in yuma, arizona, 107 degrees in palm springs and this has been going on now for three days. the power failure has knocked out traffic lights. it is causing major traffic jams and this just at the start of rush hour. it's creating, as you can see there, quite a mess. the power is out, of course, in homes and businesses. some people are trapped in elevators. power company officials tell the region's residents don't e
