bill whitaker, on assignment for "60 minutes," reached a forbidden part of burma to tell the story of the people that the u.n. calls one of the most persecuted in the world. >> reporter: the rohingya adrift at sea are a muslim minority from overwhelmingly buddhist burma. they have lived along the border with muslim bangladesh for generations. long-simmering religious animosity exploded three years ago when buddhist mobs burnedded muslims villages. more than 100,000 rohingyas fled. "my family ran to survive "he said. "they're barely surviving now." the camps are off limits but we managed to slip in. the people are frightened, hungry, and stateless. rohingya are not considered is its of burma. >> these are essentially concentration camps. people are confind to these camps. they can't leave these areas. >> reporter: human rights worker matt smith is documenting conditions in the camp. >> most people have one option when it doms movement and that is to flee by sea and so we're seeing risking their lives actually to get boats to flee to other countries. >> reporter: we went to the capitol

this eruption on july 22nd was photographed on time lapse by amateur photographer jerry whitaker of woodland, washington. meanwhile meanwhile, a watchful eye is kept on the steamy crater and surrounding area. some say the mountain shows signs of going back to sleep. others say, that's not likely, yet. but the fact is no one knows for sure. and so the vigil continues. geological survey scientists visit the crater and surrounding area as frequently as conditions permit. rock samples are collected. distances between established points are measured electronically to detect any swelling or deflation of the volcano. forest service and university scientists continue to monitor how plant and animal life are recovering. volcanoes are secretive and unpredictable things. st. helens could stay active for a week, a decade, longer. but sooner or later by one manner or another, she will change again. that's the way it is with volcanoes. to be sure, much will happen in the meantime. trees and huckleberries and wild animals will return to the mountain's flanks. stirrette lake will become blue and clear green
