book when i started to do the research, i thought they'll be an element of atonement, a white guy, grew up in america, white man, but the more i did the research for this book, the motion i felt myself with these americans who i wish i knew more about earlier in my life who were doing this amazing work. >> can you describe how you first became aware of this vast way of racial violence in the year 1919 and your thought process when you realized i've got to write a book about this? >> i was on a fellowship, and i was up at a university for a year, and i wanted to research racial violence so because i had every city i'd ever worked in -- detroit, chicago, atlanta, cincinnati, anywhere -- if you learn the history of those communities, you learn about a race riot. there's a major race riot there. as you start to research that, 1919 jumps out because it was just out of control. i mean, there's been some -- there had been a few books written about particular riots, so there's books now 40 years old about the chicago riot. there's a book about the arkansas incidence, but this other stuff no one had wrote abo

the reason why people were saying to themselves, am i dreaming is because we're used to white supremacy in america that it was extraordinary, this idea of a black person actually being elected to the presidency. in a way it is quite sad that it was such an extraordinary thing for black person to be elected. you have to remember that only twice in american history have blacks been popularly elected as governors. only three times have blacks been popularly elected as senators. we have this egregious history of racial marginal is asian, exclusion what comes to black folks in electoral politics. this was a triumph but it was a triumph against the backdrop of a sordid history. we need to remember that barack obama did not win the majority of the white vote. if it had been white folks voting, senator mccain and sarah palin would be occupying the white house right now. so it is true that barack obama won decisively in the electoral college but the election was closer than many people suggest. tavis: with that backdrop, that sort of history that you referenced a moment ago, what does it say about the colo

[applause] what brought us here today out in this field? why are we not watching the hawkeyes or grilling up some of venison or corn on the cob on this labor day weekend? what brought us together is a love of country. we see that america is hurting. we are not willing to sit back and watch the demise through some fundamental transformation of the greatest country on earth, we are here to stop that transformation and to begin the restoration of the country that we love. [applause] we are here because america is at a tipping point. america is facing a crisis. it is not a crisis like a midwest summer storm -- it moves in and then it moves on -- this kind will relentlessly rage until we restore all that is free, good, and write about america. he -- right about america.
