in white-collar government, i try to roll out a couple of popular ask permission to i try to test a couple of popular expedition. if you're just as someone honestly why you think think there are so few working-class people in political office, you're often going to get one of two different types of answers. one answer that often when i talk to people about this research is that aren't very many working-class people in political office because that's what voters want. this is a democracy and if working people are not getting to congress is because they aren't winning elections. so this is really about voters preferring white-collar professionals. the other argument i often hear is there just aren't very many qualified working-class people out there. if they had what it takes politically, that would be great but there aren't very many sort of blue-collar workers with the raw qualifications, raw skills that you need to be a successful politician. in the book i take both those arguments safely out of just look at the data. i find that neither one really lines up with what we actually know about u.s. politics. there
