i think it's also important to take note that one of the big issues that the white house has had with the house republican plan and what's really been seen as an area that needed to be negotiated and really could be the thing that could lead to a break-through on a deal is this idea of if you're going to have a two-part increase in the debt ceiling that would take the debt ceiling through the next election, november 2012, it was really how you tied that second increase in the debt ceiling after several months. the whouts senate democrats didn't like the way house republicans were doing it. they felt like it would have led to some sort of chaotic situation like we've seen with all of this back and forth over increasing the debt ceiling. they would have seen that again somewhere around the new year and didn't want to do that. they're looking at really that sort of seam, if you will, in the contempt of of this framework to maybe work it out in a way that is more amenable to the white house and to democrats. >> brianna keilar at the white house live for us tonight. cnn is dedicated to pro

around this table-- eight congressional leaders, the president, vice president, and a handful of white house officials led by chief of staff william daley-- have to reach a deal or risk sending the economy plunging back into a second deep recession. the key relationship is between the president and house republican speaker john boehner. sources say the two men have had a series of private discussions on the debt deal that began nearly three weeks ago during a round of golf. scott, the next step is that over the next two days, white house and congressional staff members will put together specific proposals to cut up to $4 trillion over the next decade. then on sunday, the president and congressional leaders will meet again here at the white house and that's when the hard bargaining will really begin. >> pelley: chip, stand by there at the white house as we stitch over to the capitol now and congressional correspondent nancy cordes. >> reporter: scott, for the first time today we started to hear lawmakers express some confidence that a debt deal could be reached and an economic crisis averted.

and that is one of the concerns that surely senator reid, the white house have to be worrying about. because they have to have enough house votes as well to get this thing passed, whatever this thing is. i think as you heard chuck was talking about some of the potential triggers that could be worked on. i think one other thing that i think they are looking at is how the timing of the expiration of the bush tax cuts could possibly be something that could be finessed, could be used as not a violation of the revenue pledge and could produce some money, because those bush tax cuts were to expire, as you know, in january of 2013. that certainly could be part of the component or could be one component of how to get enough revenue on that second part of the budget savings that are needed to make this a credible deal, and that's one of the big problems here, is making ate credible deal. there's been a lot of criticism of what senator reid first proposed, that it was, quote, gimmicky, that some of the budget cuts were fictitious or notional involving defense cuts from savings from the iraq and

we have nothing from the white house.w much pressure are you getting to support the speaker's plan? >> so, the speaker and leadership is saying this is the avenue that they would like to send over to the senate, even though the president has already said that he would veto the bill essentially, and harry reid said he's not enamored with it. at least this would be one more thing in the senate for the senators to consider. they haven't done anything unfortunately over there. what i'm doing with our leadership right now is saying, look, we've already sent a bill over there that could cut spending, cap spending and move towards a balanced budget. we can take a look at where the leader is -- the speaker is right now, but we probably want to try to plus up some of the cuts. you know, right now the president wants to cut zero in 2012. speaker wants to cut around $7 billion in 2012, and a number of us think we can up the number. likewise with the caps and likewise with the balanced budget amendment, all that needs to be addressed

, alex, there is, in fact, this compromise on the table that's being rumored on the hill at the white house. can -- it will most likely go through the senate. can it get through the united states house of representatives? we don't like to get too far afterward ourselves. there is no ink that's dry on paper. but under this type of deal it seems that the group i was talking to last night who is very fearful when house republicans and senate republicans talking one-on-one to the white house, liberal democrats thought they would be sold short, i'm hearing they are worried about the deal on its face, $3 trillion in cuts, $4.2 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, a lot of folks on the democratic side feel that could be too much given away from the obama white house, and it's going to be interesting to see whether or not they have the votes shored up in the united states house of representatives or any debt limit extension deal, can they get to the magic 2 216? that looks like why the discussion is going. >> when you say no revenue, that's political speak for no tax increase, right? >> republica
