in the whitee house. that was one of my great victories.as immunization was required by school-age and only 15 states. there is a little bit if there's an argument about 15 or 17. the first year we were working with betty and secretary we got it in all 50 states. that was exciting. with this big meeting in washington i go from one subject to another. we had a big meeting in washington to celebrate with people from all over thene country.y. the next day there's not one word in a paper about it. i was so upset so i called joe i said i know there was a camera there. he said it was ours but nobody was interested in that news the session. i got upset with a prostitute, because they covered my mental health work might the first few meetings i had. then they never showedd up anymore. one of the things i wanted to do was bringt attention to the issue, how terrible it was. and what few services there were. iic think just getting it out in the public, that's what i did in georgia. there's a good program in georgia

welcome to white house history live. and for those of us joining us in person, welcome to the historic decatur house and the white house historical association. and my name is dr. colleen hogan, a senior vice president at the white house historical association, and the director of the david rubenstein center for white house history tonight, a special episode of white house history live as we launch the book mourning the president's loss and legacy in american culture. this book was published by the university virginia press in partnership with the center for presidential history, southern methodist university, and the miller center at uva. mourning the presidents brings together and emerging scholars to examine how different generations and communities of americans have eulogized and remembered. u.s. presidents. this evening, we're joined by several scholars that contributed the book on stage. and we have others in the audience, including chester and brandon robinson. thank you for joining us this evening. dr. matthew co

so i knew i had an agenda when i got to the white house. was frustrated because i cannot always get the kind of publicity i wanted too. my mental health task force the president's commission on mental health. this is the president's commission on mental health. there's a big ceremony inviting people are interested in mental health. i was really excited. had great people, the best people. the nexthe day i picked up the "washington post" and not word, not one word. i was really distressed the "new york times" had a good article. so then i talked about it some of the press people would come came to one or two meetings. but we worked on that task force and the commission. we met long hours and it worked. mrs. carter mental health is just not a sexy issue. that made me mad. i was frustrated sometimes they would cover things i did not think was important. i didn't want mental health covered because as my project, but the stigma is so bad. it's an acceptable thing to work on. it could help people out in they country. i really they were at frustrat
