this is the cross hall in the white house. it's red carpeted and it runs from the east room on the east end of the house across to the state dining room on the west end. very famously, you can your mind's eye can visualize the president coming out of one of these side doors, probably the moat, one of the most famous occasions was president obama. when one sunday evening he walked down this hallway and announced to the nation that osama bin laden had been killed and certainly many presidents we've seen president reagan, many others walked down this hallway to a press conference in the east room and it has it looked like this most of its history, essentially. yes. yes. if we were visiting in the 1800s, what would have happened? you know, i've often asked and we've talked about our wonderful hero, william seale, the wonderful, renowned historian of white house history who has passed away. i said, bill, would george washington and thomas jefferson recognize this building if they were to come in today? he said fundamentally, yes, of

and the white house. but before we do that, i need to say a little more about japan's attack first and most importantly, why did japan attack us on december seventh, the pearl harbor attack was a massive shock, but fdr in the nation had actually been anticipating a possible military clash with japan for months. indeed, the united states and japan had been at odds for some time. the root of the conflict was japan's brutal military expansion in china and southeast asia during the 1930s. in may 1940, seeking to deter further japanese aggression, fdr had ordered the u.s. pacific fleet to hawaii. in early 1941, the two nations had begun negotiations to resolve their differences. but in july, japan emboldened by a new mutual defense treaty, it had signed with germany and hitler's swift conquest of france decided to occupy southern french indochina. we know it today as vietnam. fdr responded to this aggression by freezing japanese assets in the united states and imposing economic sanctions, including an oil emba

that's one word that just describes jimmy carter's legacy in the white house and outside the white house i will just pick up on what your previous guest, larry sabato, said, which i was sort of stunned by, in a way, he pointed out that he was a man of virtue, and yet he then went on, larry went on to say, well, we don't seem to care very much about virtue in this country anymore in our politicians. and that's a shocking thing to say. and, you know, when you're talking about jimmy carter, he was a virtuous man, a man of faith. he had no inkling of corruption. you know, you can't imagine a sex scandal around jimmy carter or indictments or anything of that sort. and people at the time, i thin larry sabato has is onto something. when he points out that we don't seem to care anymore about virtue, and that's a sad thing. and i think jimmy carter would, you know, be talking about virtue and decency if he was still with us today. >> yeah. good point. how did jimmy carter's humble roots? roots. he grew up on a peanut farm in plains, georgia. how did th presidency and the way he went about the bus

washington and what would you say is the influence that he continued to have even when carter was in the white house? oh, that's a great question. yeah, curveball refused to go to the white washington. he was offered by carter the position of chief of staff. he was the only person offered that position. and when curveball said no, i. i want to remain in atlanta, i can't afford to move to washington, which is something which was sort of a little suspicious since he was, you know, fairly well off powerful atlanta lawyer with although that was very true of bert lance bert lance shouldn't have moved washington. well, exactly. and then later on, curveball actually said, you know, bert lance would have been better off, followed by my advice and not moved to washington, but no curveball was interesting to me because the surprising thing was he he helped to explain to me carter's political orientation. you know, carter is sort of a enigma as a politician and president, liberals can figure them out. conservatives can't figure it out. he he has different positions and and, uh, and he's sort of hard to categor

you know, it was only ten years after he left the white house. and so most most of his papers were still classified. so i back off from the idea, but it you know, i was still curious about carter. i went on to other projects. and then in 2015, i sat down and wrote a proposal and i was still ignorant. i think about the south and all those other issues, but i was still curious and i wanted to learn. and you know, you write a book to try to satisfy your own curiosity. in the first instance, i sold the proposal in 2015 and then just a few weeks later, carter had that incredible press conference where he announced that he had brain cancer and was probably not going to be with us very much longer. so i thought i'd never get a chance to interview him. but as we all know, he survived. and i did get a chance to have four or five good interviews. and six years later, i have produced the book. yeah, well, talking about those interviews, i wanted to ask you about, you mentioned the prolog. you had access to president carter to interview him. i wonder what wa

the white house and white house press secretary can say whatever they like to make it sound like they were forthcoming, i find it doubtful the people are going to buy that. one other important difference here between the pardon that biden handed down for hunter and pre-trump norm for presidential pardons. until about 1950 through the trump administration, it was very, very unusual for presidents to justify pardons by arguing that the criminal justice system had engaged in unfairness. rather, presidents basically issued pardons in the frame of this person has done the wrong thing, paid their debt to society and we're giving them forgiveness. trump, of course, blow torched that norm and many of the pardons he issued said that the people he was pardoning were victims and had been treated unfairly. biden returned to the white house on the promise of restoring norms, but in bringing forward this pardon of his son, by arguing his son was a victim of a miscarriage of justice, he's actually continuing down the road that trump very much opened up in using the extraordinary platform of the whit

it lasted 11 times as long as his single term in the white house. in that time carter became a model for what a former u.s. president could be and accomplish. joining us now is robert costa, our chief election and campaign correspondent. carter, as you know, robert, was from the rural south. he grew up under segregationist laws. it was a way of life. yet he spoke up in defense of civil rights that really helped to change the course of the south. what was it about jimmy carter? why do you think he did that? >> reporter: jericka, good to be with you. to step into plains, georgia, is to step into who jimmy carter was. someone who rose from a rural boyhood in the deep south to become someone who ran for governor in georgia and said that the time for racial discrimination is over. that, when he made the inaugural address he had in january of 1971, he cast the south in a new light. said he would break through the part, and that set the tone for what happened in 1976 when he ran for the white house as an outsider. >> let's talk about his ascent to the oval
