and thanks to the white house historical association for having me tonight. i guess i should say everything i'll talk about tonight, of course, is my own view on things, not the national park service's. i just have to throw that disclaimer in there. but i am happy to be both a national park service employee in a historian, james garfield. you know, when people think about james garfield, what they generally think is the few things that they know about him, which is he was president, he had a beard and he got shot. and those things are all true, no doubt about it. they're all true. but there was a lot more to garfield than that. he was a brilliant academic prior to prior to his political career. he grew up here in northeast ohio. i'm just not that far from where john is, down at the marble room there. and i think i maybe would like to head there when this is over tonight to get one of those old fashions that looks pretty good, but he was he was born and raised here in northeast ohio. you know, never really called himself an abolitionist, but he was very, very
